Has anyone had an ESI that worked?

I've had 2 now and no change. Is it worth trying more?

  • I had a disc bulge at L4/5 (my surgery was for other issues, not disc related) and was experiencing pain down both legs past my knees due to the bulge. I had one ESI then put on a 5-day medrol pack and I never had any more disc related problems.

I believe it's been said here that many docs will want to try three ESIs for the patient to get the maximum benefit from them, but that info only comes from what I've read here, not my experience or personal knowledge.

Take care and I hope these start working for you.
  • chickenofthesea , first welcome to the site.

For me they didn't work. Some docs use them for pain releif, some to help with a diaganose.

However, I have seen them help many ppl, and relief lasting anywhere from a few days to several months.

Hopefully your next one will be the magic one and you get relief,
  • I've tried them for my neck and shoulder - did not work for me. My shoulder was first, when my neck started having issues my NS wanted me to try the 3 shot series. Like the shoulder, no-go on relief.

    PCTF C4 - T2, Laminectomies C5, C6 & C7. Severe Palsy left arm/hand.
  • I've had a few and for me there's been some relief from sciatica. I've needed other facet joint and nerve blocks for pain in the back and hip. The ESI sometimes takes a few days to two weeks to work for me. Hope they help you. Charry
DDD of lumbar spine with sciatica to left hip,leg and foot. L4-L5 posterior disc bulge with prominent facets, L5-S1 prominent facets with a posterior osteocartilaginous bar. Mild bilateral foraminal narrowing c-spine c4-c7 RN
  • and Im feeling some relief...but I still need to take my pain meds, or I would not be functioning tonight! My level of pain has decreased, but I still do have pain. The DSoc told me that it may take 3 injectiosn to get better, or that someone people see no results from them. Its totally an individual thing for what kind, if any relief you get...
  • I had a round of 3 ESI's.
The first one gave little results, but some relief.
The second round my PM Doc did 2 injections on each side.
This provided great relief for 2 months. I had very little foot burning and the nerves in my hips were finally calm. After 2 months they gave me a 3rd set which did nothing at all. I later found out he injected the level above the surgery sight to see if a bad disc there was causing any pain.
The nerve pain has returned except the left hip pain. My spasms also increased after the injections.
Although I was mad that he wasted that shot, I am glad that he was able to rule out other areas and pinpointed the origin of pain.
So 3 rounds for 2 months relief is not worth it for m
Steroids are a miracle drug for me but are just aweful for your body in the long run.

I have had many ESI's over the last few years some help others did not. I have been in pain for 3+ years(failed fusion). My PM Dr. gave me an injection L5-S1 61 days ago.
The next morning I woke with complete relief. Been able to stop taking all meds and I was on the full array of meds. We shall see how long this lasts. Hopefully forever!

    Don't ever give up!

  • I've had 4. They were moderately helpful. The last one was the most helpful of the 4, because the inflammation was the most severe when I had it.

But I have pain coming from multiple sources, so I was never assured a miracle. Just maybe a little help, which I got.
