Muscle Spasms; Can anyone please enlighten me as to what goes on in a spinal fusion?

My new doctor said his gut feeling is that I may need a spinal fusion in my T-10/11.
I have had Spinal Column Stimulators put in. I have 2 leads and 2 stimulators put in. They are doing nothing for my muscle spasms and pain. The first is on the spine and the other is subcutaneous (like a TENS unit). The new doctor seems to think that I do have instability. I seem to finally understand what they mean by instability i.e. the vertebra are moving around and rubbing against whats left of the disc. I just have 2 questions;
1) Can you please enlighten me as to what they mean by instability? 2) What should I expect if a spinal fusion is done.
Thank you all.

  • I can only comment on your instability question. I had spondylolisthesis, a condition where one vertebrae slides off of the vertebrae below. Before my fusion, if I moved in a certain way, I could feel the vertebrae move. This would result in horrible back spasms that would go on for several days. My instability was at the L4/5 level.

    Best wishes,
