Cyclist recovering from Microdiscectomy

Hello All,

Just has a microdiscectomy on L4/L5 on Thursday (9/16) and I am recovering well I think. Finally had the surgery after trying chiro, cortisone injections and PT over the past six months with no relief of my nerve pain. I am a competitive cyclist and was finding that I was never able to ride more then ten miles with out aggravating my nerve. Made training rather difficult. MRI shown a blown disc and a cyst which was causing all the pain. So are there any others here who are cyclist or athletes who have had this proceedure done? How has your recovery been going? Any tips? For one, I do know not to rush recovery.

  • Try and find the sept surgery thread which will be really helpful for you.

  • Well, I wasn't a truly competitive cyclist, but I was certainly an enthusiast. I had a Discectomy at L5/S1 in September of 2008 and after 6 weeks I felt like a new person!

In the spring of 2009, I started biking again and I was in heaven. Unfortunately, I hit some steep hills way too hard and reherniated my disk. That led to a second discectomy which never got better (in terms of pain). I ended up having a fusion.

As a competitive cyclist, I'm sure that you have excellent core strength. I don't know how much you would lose as a result of surgery, but I lost what little I had, I guess. To this day, I firmly believe that if I had first rebuilt my core before getting back into riding hills, I would be in a much better place today.

Best wishes in your recovery. Take care of that disk!! :)

  • thanks. I sure am planning on just focusing on rebuilding my core once the dr clears me. Think I'm going to stay away from hills for awhile too. I already sat on the sidelines for six months so I'm not going to rush getting back to training. Just can't wait to be able to take a nice bike ride without searing nerve pain :)
