Diskectomy/Laminectomy, L5/S1 and now reherniated

Well, I totally rushed my recovery and now i'm paying for it. New MRI shows reherniation with a free floating fragment against my nerve root. Hurts... did I mention it HURTS yet?

Anyway, I called my surgeon and the nurse said he will call me back tomorrow. I was pretty stupid and did a major construction project 3 weeks post op. I know I did this to myself.

What lies ahead for me? A revision? Nothing? Fusion? We just opened a bounce house business in Kingston and i'm worried i'm going to need a fusion. I have DDD with L5/S1 being the worst level.

  • I re-herniated to the left in my C5/6 about a month and a half ago. In my case since (dig this) "only had pain", and no weakness or numbness my NS believes the disk didn't stay on the nerve, so for now they are doing nothing about mine.

I don't know how they work lumbar, but I am guessing it will depend more on functionality effects, and any neurological issues that may be there, or begin. One thing I noticed though different than mine, you were not fused when it went, so it might be handled totally differently. Sorry I wish I had better answers. And yes it hurts major big time! Sorry...*HUG*

    PCTF C4 - T2, Laminectomies C5, C6 & C7. Severe Palsy left arm/hand.
  • Called my Dr. 3 days ago. NO response except for a call from his nurse saying he would speak to the surgeon and get back to me... ugh
  • it will depend. I reherniated after a microdiscectomy at L5/S1.

I had 2 choices (though each doctor felt it was only 1 choice). I could have a revision or a fusion.

After much research and consults, I opted for the revision and so far happy. My thought process was that fusion came with many risks and I'm only 41. I figured if I can buy more time, technology and information will get better and I may have other options outside of fusion.

Good luck. HOpefully revision or ESI is an option for you.
