Cyst after lumbar laminectomy L5-S1 no doctor knows what to do so far

I am 30 year old. Back on 1/22/10 I hat a lumbar laminectomy. As soon as I woke up I experienced numbness throughout my calf ankle, foot, and toes. I was told this is normal. I was told my back had shattered disc fragments and my nerve was freyed like a rope. He put some fibrin glue in and thought I was good to go.
I complained the week after of severe nerve pain (mind you, I had been much better before the surgery). I bugged the doc non stop. He finally seen me in 3/10 and said I had to wait longer because it was too soon, even with the pain I was experiencing. I then in 4/10 finally got the MRI and was told I had a fluid filled cyst growing on my L5-S1 nerve root area. He suggested I have it explored. He opened me in 4/10, explored and removed the cyst. I immediatley felt relief from the pains I was experiencing. I then went on with life, some pain, nothing severe. Then in 8/10 I was starting to get back to working out, and the pains started to return. It's horrible, I do not sleep at night. I had another MRI and was told the cyst is back and it's bigger. I have been through 3 doctors, and the final one had to meet with specialist. He told me the specialist should wipe the hands of me and send me to Cleveland clinic. My problem is, am I getting worse as I wait for answers? I feel I am. I am so stressed out from lack of sleep, nerve pain, I just don't know what to do. Why do these doctors seem so afraid of me? I now have a new symptom of severe, but not painfull, calf spasm's. I just started getting them today. I have had them for over an hour now. Any advice or stories may help me.

  • I also ended up with a cist after discectomy of L4/5. Was told it was nothing. I had surgery in April after almost a year of excruciating pain. But I was not prepared for the long long recovery period of back surgery. My doctor grimaced every time I asked for a refil of pain pills and inferred I might have a dependency problem.I wondered if he ever had back surgery and knew what a simple slight turn felt like afterward.

One day I lifted some boxes and the back pain came back affecting my left leg now (previously pain ran under the right leg). Unable to sleep bend over drive sleep have sex...enjoy life in any way. I cant even walk without pain. I cant exercise or work and am gaining weight at a rapid rate because I am bored out of my mind sitting in front of the TV and have become seriously depressed, nothing interests me.My weight a whopping 224 pounds straining my back just from the weight in my stomach.

Here is the bottom line: another surgery another 6 months to repair your back muscles. I have already lost 50% of my muscle of my entire body from the last recovery. A second back surgery will either turn me into Jabba the Hut or the equivalent of a 99 year old body on a 49 year old mind. I have already lost the ability to kyack, ski, climb mountains, horseback ride, do tai chi and kickboxing, garden, surf carry a laundry basket...Either way I have no life now and will have no life afterwards.

The doctors are afraid of you because they think you will sue. And they are afraid of giving patients opiod based pain pills because the government is monitoring them so closely. They would rather operate on you and put you through hell afterwards then prescribe the pills that could get you through pysical therapy.

Surgery only traded one pain for another. It ruined the rest of my body and my life. My PCP wont give me anything for pain, my Neurosurgeon wont see me till I get another MRI, it will be weeks till someone will give me a prescription for pain relief.

I so feel your pain. Tuesday I had to pay $100. to the emergency room to get 10 pain pills. Had some relief. but I am biting the bullet again now.
