Lump at base of right rod in lumbar spine

Hi fellow spineys.

I was having some pain in my lumbar yesterday, right more than left and it seemed like it was at the base of my right rod/bottom screw. (My lumbar pain is almost always on the left bottom side and top across both sides.) It not only hurt from inside, but also to the touch. So as I was feeling around there, I found what seemed like a fatty lump where I was hurting. The lump is painful to press on and it moves.

Anybody else had one of these painful lumps near or on your lumbar hardware and if you did and talked to your doc, what did they say? I'm just asking for your experiences here, not a diagnosis.

I'm thinking that this is most likely a benign fatty tissue lump and might be flaring, causing pain because I now have hardward and a screw in that area.

  • I just joined this yesterday, and i also had my 6week preop appt. yest. too. I have a lump at the top which popped up Oct1st.I had a posterior lumbar spinal fusion 6 pedicule screws 2 metal rods and L4&L5 discs removed .at appt.i asked my doc what is this lump that wasn't there 1st 4 weeks and he said mine was muscle pouching & it was normal.I imagined it was something far worse,of course. It would not hurt 4 U 2 put in a call 2 your doc.& run it by them.I asked when he was physically present to c it so if u call & explain it they might want u 2 pop in to make a determination based on seeing the lump rather than go by over the phone description. And you will have peace of mind too!I will add u 2 my Buddy list~ let me know the outcome & Take Care
  • I have these lumps as well. On both sides of my lumbar area…been struggling with them for over a year now with no pain help. Did you ever have any relief???

I don't have any hardware but I did have fatty lump at base of spine and my Dr. said mine was my Facet joint arthritis. I just checked for the lump and noticed it's not there anymore since I had facet joint ablation done on L2 or L3 to Sacral 2 or 3 done this year one side and last year one side. I'm just starting to feel better since being disabled since 2007. I hope your Dr. can give you some more answers. I tried massage and injections and can't believe I don't feel it anymore. Best wishes. Charry
