My husband is slated to undergo an ALIF this Friday and I am a little freaked out about it all..
His back history: 3 Laminectomies, 2 level fusion in 2005, 3 level fusion in 2009.. The last fusion in 2009, the metal rods and screws are pulled away from the spine. SO they basically have been stabbing him in the back and nerves..It wasn't until he finally saw a new surgeon that this was all seen on a simple set of Xrays..
Right now he is in so much pain, he can barely walk and when he does he is hunched over like the Hunchback of Notre Dame. He also has massive pain in his leg and is losing use of it along with bladder incontinence that 2 weeks ago was confirmed by a urologist is coming from his back problems.
The new surgeon said that there will be THREE surgeons working on him. One general surgeon, the Neurosurgeon and a Cardiac Surgeon..
What I am confused about is, How long does this procedure take? His doctor said they will do an ALIF with cages to stabilize everything and take out the herniated disc that should have originally been taken out..
Also, what is recovery like? Is it VERY painful? How long will he be down? Are there many serious complications to look out for?..
Anyone else had this proceedure done? how did you do with it?..
I"m just very scared right now because all of his back surgeries have been through his back and now they are going through the front and his aortic artery has to be moved and it's really scaring me.. Thanks for any information you can give me..
