I have had DDD for years now in my neck and low back. I was using vicodin which really helped. I was able to function and never felt loopy. My PCP sent me to a pain doctor who wanted me to try tramadol first. This med made me really sick and never touched the pain. I had Epidural Steroid Injections in my neck yesterday and she put me on this new med Nucynta. I have taken it as prescribed and it has not even touched the pain or horrible headache I have. I just called the doctor and she said to up it to every 6 hrs instead of every 8. I am so frustrated!! Why if something was working would she change it!!?? I did see another pain doc just for a second opinion and his first words were "I don't believe in pain meds!!" WTH!! I'm only 41 and and I would rather take something that helps and I can do my job(I'm a CNA and lift all the time)than to try all this other crap that doesn't do a thing! Any advice?? Thanks for listening!!

  • I'm sorry to hear about your pain not being helped by your new med but I would be concerned about your headache. Can you call the PMs office and let them know of your headache if it's really bad and if you never had it before your epidural injection especially it being Friday and you may need to get checked out.
DDD of lumbar spine with sciatica to left hip,leg and foot. L4-L5 posterior disc bulge with prominent facets, L5-S1 prominent facets with a posterior osteocartilaginous bar. Mild bilateral foraminal narrowing c-spine c4-c7 RN
  • Thanks for responding and thanks for the welcome!! It was my PM that I called and her response was just take the med every six instead of every 8 hrs. She said it's too soon to tell if it's working or not. I completley understand but like you said it is Friday and I mentioned that to them. I did take another one about an hour ago and still feel the same. I have read a lot about this med and most people say it does nothing or works right away. Just feel like I'm being treated like an addict. This med is in the same category as morphine and she said she doesn't think the vics were working for me but to be very careful with this new one as it's extremely addictive. Hmmmm..............
  • How many days have you been off of vicoden? How many day have you been on tne Nucynta?

Some meds take a few days to build up in your system before you start seeing the benefits.

The injections can cause headaches (also the med changes can make you sick) you poor thing >:D< can you take some tylenol or advil to help?

The PM- the clinic I am going to does everything. I looked on line before my appt and checked out the other clinics, maybe you can look on line before you waste time intervieing PM docs? Look for ones that are all inclusive and I am sure you will be happy. Look for a pain specialist- this person will try to locate you pain an treat your pain. He/she should give meds and injection as well as other treatments once you are diagnosed. They will also be able to send you to NS/OS if they see a serious problem. At least my clinic does.

    Don't give up. Feel better,

  • You can put an ice pack at the back of your head. It might help. If the headache gets really bad don't hesitate to go to the ER you could have a spinal fluid leak.
  • I'm grateful that I have a doctor (family doctor) that prescribes my meds, and when I strongly state what does or does not work for me, she will listen and help me. Vicodin is what works for me, and my back pain is such that I have to use the Vicodin 7.5 ES that has the 750 mg of tylenol. I am aware taking a high mg of tylenol is unwise and hurts my liver, however, without taking that strength, I start to be overwhelmed with pain. Also, have endocet on hand that use usually 1x day to assist break high pain level. Hope you can talk to doctor's office and encourage them to give you meds that you know work for you. Hang in there, you will feel better. :)
  • Same situation here. What state are you in? It is so frustating to be in pain daily and feel like no one belives you or treat you like a addict.
