Hello (or G'day). I'm from Newcastle, N.S.W, Australia, came upon this site, looking answers to back pain.
I blew my back (as I put it), about 20 years ago, getting dressed for work one morning & as I bent to get something off my side table, I sneezed.
And that was the moment that set me down the road looking for relief from pain. Many people have told me that the sneeze was just the final straw & it could have been anything to set it off. Regardless, it has totally changed my life, learning copping skills, pain management & training myself to do the simplest of things (like turning over in bed)
I have been diagnosed with L5/S1 chronic disc & bulge & L4/5 bulge & suffer from sciatica (boy do I suffer).
Sciatica pain is something that has taken over my life, there seems to no escape from it when it flares. Trying to sleep, stand, sit or walk. Last onset lasted for 3 months even with a really fantastic Physio I go to & the period between bouts is now measured in days, when it used to be weeks.

Anyway, enough from grumble bum. Pleased to know you.

  • Howdy and Welcome to Spine Health!!!

If you asked me 3 years ago, "Could you sneeze and cause a disk to blow", I would have blown you off! I sneezed a few years ago, and my back went south! It is amazing what fubar's our disks?!? I am L2/3/4.

I crashed a helicopter 25+ years ago, and it continues to haunt me to this day! Trust your body, and find your answers. *HUG* Sorry to hear you are hurting!

At the top of the web page here is a "search box", and you might find answers (via doctors and fellow posters) to your questions. Again.....Welcome aboard!!!

  • Hi Pace,

Welcome to the Spine-Health support forum! I think you'll find this a friendly place where you can access loads of information about your back and can spend time interacting with forum members who have been where you are and know what you're dealing with. I'm not an Aussie but extend a warm welcome, nontheless. :)

As I sit here in the middle of the night with sciatic pain down my leg, I can say I feel your pain! Sciatica is no fun and can be very discouraging. I'm in very early recovery from a 2-level lumbar fusion and the main nerve root which was decompressed by the surgery is giving me fits. Too much messing around the nerve during surgery, I expect. Anyway, I expect this pain to diminish and hopefully go away at some point. But you're in a situation that sounds endless, from the way you describe it. You've obviously had MRI and know what your problem areas are but have you been given any treatment options? Are you doing anything besides PT? Have you had any epidural steroid injections to see if they might relieve some of your pain? Has anyone mentioned surgery as a potential for you?
