I am 9-1/2 weeks post-op after breaking my back mountain biking. My T10 shattered on impact and I was stabilized two levels above and two levels below with 2 rods and 10 screws. A slightly harder force would have paralyzed me, so I know I am lucky.
I am struggling to handle the constant pain, as I am only 5ft.2in. tall and can feel the hardware constantly. Does anyone know if this will get better anytime soon? I was a really active person (youthful and energetic at 48 years old) -- swimmer, runner, biker, snowshoer, surfer, hiker -- and am extremely worried that my quality of life will be changed for the worse from this point on. My surgeon says they don't generally take out the hardware, but I'm been told that if they don't I will lose all mobility in the five levels of vertabrae that are immobilized.
Trying not to get depressed, but I'm so weak and exhausted every day, and it's difficult when you were like the Energizer bunny before. Can anyone provide any feedback that might help?
