Well I'm new to this site, I just wanted to ask for any suggestions or comments.
I started having back pain when i was 16. I was always really active in sports and basketball and one day it completely tensed up and I could hardly walk. After a long process of visiting doctor after doctor (who dismissed me as a young girl who was just complaining about a little pain), I finally got sent for an MRI. I ended up having a herniated disk at the L5 level. I discussed procedures with my surgeon and he recommended steroid injections. I had 2 but they were more harmful than helpful, so in June of that year, I had a microdiscectomy surgery..
A year later I was still not free of my back pain, and my surgeon thought my pain was caused because the disc space between my vertebrae was too small and pushing on nerves. I had constant nerve pain running up and down my leg every minute of the day. I stopped playing any sports or being active in any way. So in the winter of 2009 (I was now 18) I had a spinal fusion at the L5 level. While operating, my surgeon realized that the joints in my back were irregular. Apparently they were facing the wrong way which provided me with MORE movement then normal, which was causing extra wearing down of my discs. The surgery ended up taking a lot longer than usual due to my unique situation, but he got the job done.
7 months went by and I was still in a ton of pain. I was struggling with going to university taking a full class load, as well as being on daily pain medication. I was told that my back was healing very quickly and correctly. However, my pain was getting worse and my surgeon was more or less stumped. I was taking 9 pills a day of my pain killer which was ultimately taking control of my emotions and metal state. I developed an ulcer from the excess of pain medication as well.
I'm 19 now and am booked for yet another surgery this winter (2010). I am getting a scar tissue clean up which hopefully will take the pressure off the nerve running down my leg. I'm having an extremely hard time trying to deal with being so young and completely immobile. I was once an athlete and now I'm starting to gain weight and do nothing but lay down. I want to know if anyone else has different joints like me, or has had any of the same surgeries. I have my whole life ahead of me and I just want to get back to being normal. I'm so sick of being in constant pain and having people underestimate how hard my situation is. Please anyone, I'd love to hear from you.
