Can you break your hardware from a fall?

Hello all -

Had L4-S1 ALIF on 8/17. On 9/8 I still had leg pain and they discovered a fragment still on the nerve so went in for outpatient laminectomy/discectomy..

Have been feeling pretty good. Slow but sure progress.

I'm 36, in good shape and don't smoke.

Here's my question.

On 10/30, which was just about 11 weeks post ALIF, I fell down about 5-6 marble stairs. I feel pretty good.. no major pain and certainly no major change in my pain level.. but now I'm freaked out that I may have damaged something. After almost 11 weeks, would you think I'd be fused enough to withstand any damage?

How would I know if something was seriously wrong?

I have an appt with my doctor later this week where I'll get x-rays but just curious if anyone has experience with this?

  • My hardware is in the neck presently, but my NS told me that the hardware (titanium) and the screws affixed in the bone makes it very, very strong. Chances are you are probably fine, but *I* for sure would let my surgeon know of that fall! The x-rays will tell him for sure if anything moved. I will keep my fingers crossed that the worst that happened is a bruise or two. Please let us know how it goes. :)

    PCTF C4 - T2, Laminectomies C5, C6 & C7. Severe Palsy left arm/hand.
  • Since you are feeling pretty good I would guess you are okay. Still, a simple x-ray should tell the truth.

Up until 1 year post-op my NS was having me x-rayed at least every 3 mo.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you...
