POPPING & CLICKING in my back!

Hi all, I am a bit FREAKED out!

Sorry I haven't been on the forum for a few days, haven't been feeling well.

Yesterday was 12 weeks since my ALIF L4-5. P/t has me doing knee raises in standing position, not real high, I can't even make it to hip level. Tonight I was standing on my left leg and when I raised my right bent leg upward I heard & felt a loud POP and while lowering it, its cracking & clicking. It was so deep within me. At first, I couldn't tell if it was coming from my hip or back. (my knee was popping too, but that is the norm for me)

I placed my hand on my upper lumber and the popping is in deed coming from there. Scared me to death, it feels higher then my fusion, but right away I'm thinking loss screw or something! I did do the knee raise to show my husband & son and it continues to POP.

Yes, it is causing pain to do that move, so I won't till I figure this out! My spine is hurting, deep in the spine not muscle pain and not nerve pain, just straight up bone like pain.

PLEASE, has this happened to any of you?

Any opinions? Should I be concerned?

Thanks for reading and for your kind replies.

Hope everyone is well.

  • Yeh - I have it with each step of life, literally! It is quite normal for me to click/pop and that has been explained to me as the facet joints coming together.

At times, they will jam together and they lock up on me, causing a lotta discomfort, but most of the time, as in most weeks, it just pops away as I walk and I pay no attention to it.

I do get a bit tired, and it is in that area that my back "feels sore" but that is about it.

I noticed it first more than 10 years ago. I honestly forget when, but it was after marrying my sweetheart.
  • For your reply.
Facet joints? It's just so odd, I never had this before yesterday and its so pronounced. It is only occurring while lifting my right leg. Scary stuff.

  • Yes - I noticed that kind of movement seems to aggravate it. The lifting leg part. I figure that the spine muscles pull - "tense" to give a platform for the leg to move and that motion seems to set up a more pronounced "noise" from the spine.

For me - if i put my hand on it, it is a pronounced movement and physical snap. You can feel it.

I mentioned it to my Physio and he got me to walk for a bit, with his hands on me, told what it was and not to worry. If it stops, let him know! LOL

If it does concern you, get you physio or Dr to check and confirm that this is the issue and then you know for sure.

    Do take care!
  • your ovbiosly worried , so how bout ringing yourP/t and/or surgeon and explain whats happening
let them talk you through it, get an explanation to ease your mind, yes
better to find out than worry
all these strange symptoms can be such a worry and we can go thinking the worst ... right
    so make the call

    feel better soon

  • Yes I have clicking also, but I don't have any hardware in my back. I get clicks - dull click in lumbar when I bend down. Does not give me pain or any discomfort after words.

I would suggest that you contact your doctor that is following your situation. It's hard for anyone here to give a medical answer when they don't quite know you or your history. You might want to get your medical records to look over including copies of any test results.

    Hope this helps..

  • I did call my physical therapist & pain mgmt doc yesterday morning and they both agreed with Centurion, sounds like facet joints.

Today at p/t the therapist got to hear & feel it. Odd, he said as it appears to be popping at a couple of different levels. Confused him so much he literally put his ear on my back to try and narrow down the level, but from what I feel and what he felt & heard it appears that I'm popping anywhere from L1 down to L5. The pops are kind of jumping around my lumbar region, not isolated to one level. However, its only right sided. It is a bit painful as it pops, dull bone like spine ache and after doing the standing knee raises a few times, I am in a lot of pain. Deep in my back, right hip, upper thigh, groin and buttock. Lucky me, my right leg has been carrying my left leg for months!

I called the NS who is performing my Myelogram on Monday and he said not to worry unless I get new or extreme pain and to hold tight & relax till Monday morning.

We should get some answers from the Myelogram. (I hope!)
    Thanks again!

  • I'm 8 weeks postop plif surgery. My MD warned me that I might have pops and he was right. So this is pretty normal. In addiition to the plif, they discovered a large bundle of vessels that were constricting my spinal nerves of cerebral spinal fluid. He said that now that everything is freed up, my nerves are irritated since there's now an increase of CSF. I have such severe nerve and back pain, especially at night. I can't lay on my sides or back. Sleep in the recliner. Still wearing a brace. Taking lortab, soma and lyrica. I'm still in a lot of pain especially since I started PT last week. I hate this. So frustrating and depressing. Anyone with similarities?
