question about foot/leg pain

AprillynnAAprillynn Posts: 2
Hi! This will be the 3 month mark where I am dealing with this sciatica pain. I have had xrays done where it shows "moderate disc space narrowing at L4/5 and L5/S1" I was referred to Physical Therapy where it helped some. At the 8 week mark the pain in my lower back was lessening and I no longer felt the buring shooting pain. What I feel now is numbness and tingling in my leg from my knee down to my foot. The top of the foot is painful and I have a sharp pain in the calf. I was referred then to get a MRI which was a couple days ago, I am awaiting the results. I am currently taking Oxycodone (which I don't really want to get hooked on) and Ibuprofen 600mg which I take daily. I am also being referred to a Physiatrist in a couple weeks.

My question is: If you no longer have back pain (it's only a slight ache) and that burning shooting pain down your leg is the nerve healing itself? Or is this just the next step of this condition? If I can still flex my foot but my toes are numb is there permanent nerve damage? Is surgery my only option at this point with the leg pain?

Thank you for any feedback. I am returning to work next week from a 14 week maternity leave .. and I have to be on my feet 8-12 hours a day. I am really nervous about it!

  • Hiya , Welcome to spine health >:D< , have a wonder around the site, its full of information that may help you!The information and advice i give to you is based on my own personal experience :? A simular thing happened to me, i was told that narrowing of the discs on an x-ray could mean that you have a trapped nerve :O you would need an MRI scan to confirm this. Its quite interesting that you have had this since you had your baby (congratulations). Did you have an epidural? It could also mean that things are still calming down after the birth :? To discuss this further my advice would be to see a consulting orthopedic surgeon, this will give you the answers you require. Let us know how you get on, keep us posted >:D<
