I received an interesting email today from an System Administrator at another Online Forum site. I believe I got the email only because the Admin from that site and I have known each other for over 20 years.

The 'jest' of the email was that they have been receiving a number of complaints from other members detailing a few other members. The Admin there did some searching and found that about 3 of those suspect member names we also member at many other forum sites. He asked me questions about some members here. I told him that I had to refuse from answering any of those questions. There is a degree of privacy that I think is very important and I would not provide any information. He understood, but also told me he has already been collecting information from other sites and the feedback has all been very consistent

We will never give out information about any member here UNLESS it has to do with a Internet Crime, Malicious Attacks on others, Involved with Pornography and only other serious problems. But it was very interesting to note, that he as well as other sites are beginning to clamp down on problem members. The details they provide are the same across sites. They know what names they are looking into and it sure seems like they will get the information they need.

Again, we at Spine-Health will not give out member information, except for the cases noted above.

  • Very interesting.

I applaud your professionalism. And agree with your conditions for sharing info.
  • Thank you! I certainly agree, having been involved IRL on a couple of crime issues, that just happened to have local roots for myself. It has felt good to provide local law contacts when able.

And people - including myself, use the same name tag over and over, except when showing clan affiliation as a gamer.

    Attitude - precedes us.

It is one reason I try to keep that positive attitude, regardless of what is going on.

    best regards all
  • That is so scary. Would you send the information to the people involved so they can make an informed choice as to which forums they wish to post on?

Nobody wants to hear that there are a lot of complaints, especially when they end up on the wrong side of a cross-community debate (since people will use multiple accounts and complaints as a weapon). But I would really not choose to post on a board that would snoop rather than just dealing with me personally.

BTW, I also understand now nasty these things can be, and how much effort people will put into hurting someone when they are carrying a grudge.
  • I agree with your reasons for giving out information. I think sharing information with others should not be handed out to other site owners who are asking for info in an e-mail, just because their reasons for asking may not be what they say they are.
  • Every online forum you sign up for has a Privacy Statement. You agree to it when you sign for the account. Most people never bother. Some flat out tell you they will "share" information where they decided to. That's where your profile can sometimes have too much information that you think is not shared and it is.

And if you have a Facebook account you obviously are not concerned about your privacy, they aren't... LOL

Good for SH not handing out the info to other forum staff.
  • Ron,

HB pretty much said what I would have. Are you going to contact those to whom they queried of? I agree a thousand percent too that if a site is snooping, it's a site not worth my time either. Thanks for maintaining privacy with us. :)

  • HB,

I was just thinking of something. If these people are an issue on said board, then the admin of *that* or *those* boards (forums) should just kick them off. I think it's pretty crappy if someone is behaving then leave them be, if not, and they are breaking the rules of said forum, then fine. But snooping ticks me off personally. I'm only on 3 forums, and even at times it's hard to keep up with em! This site is my primary forum site. Sigh, reminds me of high school. (G)

  • Well, I guess I can kind of see where the other administrator was coming from; nobody likes spammers, trolls, phonies or people who simply enjoy upsetting the community purely for sh*+s and giggles. He was trying to educate himself before taking any action against these members, but thank you Ron, for not compromising anyone's privacy here!! I'm sure after this thread, those offending members, if they are on this site, should know who they are and hopefully correct the error in their ways.

As always, keep up the great work!!

(and yes, Graham, if there was an "agree" button, I certainly would have used it for Ron's post!! hehe)
