Well here is a little background, you can see my lumbar probs down in my footer, but over the last year have developed problems in cervical with C5/6. I tried ESI's that did not help and eventually had an MRI that said I have spinal cord impingement at C5/6. I saw 3 surgeons, all that said I DO need cervical surgery (either ADR or fusion) but that it was not emergent. I was planning on dealing with this all after the holidays and in the meantime just keep the pain in control. Well the past few days it got UNBEARABLE, it was worse pain then I ever remember feeling with my lumbar and I was having a lot of new nerve symptoms, even some incontenince.
So...needless to say I go to the ER. They are great with pain management and order me an MRI, I started with a GREAT doc who was really taking me seriously. SO I wait and wait and wait and wait (you know how that is) and finally at 3am this ARSE of a doctor comes in and says, your MRI is clear you need to go home. I FREAKED out. I said you mean to tell me there are no problems in my cervical spine MRI, and he said not from the radiologist report. I said well here is my last MRI report can you ask him why before I had pretty severe problems and now I don't? Anyway that was to no avail, he just had no answers. SO I go home an emotional wreck. It gets better.....
At 9am this morning I get a phone call from the amazing doc I had first last night..."I am sorry Emily but we did a reread on your MRI and you do have major cord impingement that has gotten worse since previous MRI's, consistent with all of the symptoms you are having." The end result is that I need to be seen by a NS for surgery "sooner rather than later" unless things get worse, and then it becomes emergent and need to go back to ER.
It just goes to show how sometimes we are treated like we are crazy, and sometimes made to feel that our problems are not really anything serious.
Anyway, I am still having a very emotional time because I missed my trip home today to see my parents for Christmas, and am not liking knowing that I will have to get surgery sooner than I may have thought.
I wish all of you an amazing and hopefully pain free holiday!! I will update if anymore comes up!
