C3-C4 ACDF Recovery and Cause questions. Cycling questions?

I was hurt back in August. I was at a house fire wearing all my gear and carrying a ladder. I looked up and felt an intense pain in my neck. That is how this all started. Just last week I had my C3-C4 fused. My first Dr. (ortho) was an idiot. He tried to say I was genetically predisposed. The second Dr.(NS) said that I was only injured at one spot and there was nothing genetic about it.

It has been 5 days since I had surgery. My previous is pretty much gone. I have pain and stiffness from the surgery. I also broke out in hives(guessing the antibotics) but it is going away.

So, my question. I rode a bike a lot before I got hurt. I rode 10 miles to work every day. So, can I do that again? I rode a couple centuries on my fixed gear too. I also wanted to do a ironman. Obviously not tomorrow. Is there many professional athletes that have had an ACDF and went back to work? I have been a fireman for 6 years and I was in the 101st Airborne. I like being active.

The other question is does anyone know why my C3-C4 disk would herniate. I can't remember an specific tramatic event. But everybody says its not a common spot to hurt. Could cycling cause this or wearing a heavy fire helmet? Or does this thing just happen. I don't want it to happen again.

Thanks for you insight and help.

  • that heavy head gear could cause neck problems. As far as riding your bike....I'd wait and ask the Dr what his thoughts are. I am 3 months post op and I'm just now getting back to more moderate activity. Your really early having had your surgery...take it easy and don't push too hard right now. The riding position on a bike could put stress on your C spine. I would make sure I was good and fused! Total fusion can take months.
