After dealing with this primary care group all the way across town, I finally decided to find a local pain managment doc and see what he has to say about these bone these bones - OH this bones.

His receptionist was very polite and asked about insurance ex ... And was able to make an appoint for Wednesday of THIS WEEK! No(2 - 3 week) wait!?

She said to bring all discs I had with previous studies and that the appointment would be about an hour .... Well shoot I could add up the past 15 times I've seen doc's and I don't think it would add to an hour. Maybe this guy actually takes what he does seriously?

On a side note I pulled something in by mid lower back shoveling snow this morn. ACDF+LBP & Hernias + stenosis + snow and ice = Troblems for this tiger ..... gr gr gr gr .....

Well wish me luck for Wenesday ... It would be so much better to have a doc manageing me tht is'nt a $100 cab ride away.

Fun we can have with bones and cartilage and ligaments and hardware and stuff like that!!

Hope everyone is having a reduced pain day!!

  • I needed a good chuckle.. Hope it all works out well, let us know - today is the big day correct?!
  • Howdy Dave,

What kind of doctor is this? Is he a surgeon as well? It's good to see you are happy with him, and it sounds like a good fit to boot!

Fingers crossed the ESI's help this go around. *HUGZ*

After seeing countless doctors - specialists - subspecialist - etc etc .... This physician was the best history and physical I have had I think EVER had in my life! He did spend every minute (and them some) of an hour going over both my neck and my back issues. Detailed history on both and excellent exams.

Although I have avoided even the thought of doing anything like it again (facet injections) I even agreed to getting ESI's done to 3 - 4 levels in my neck. That is scheduled for next week. I trust this doc that much after a first visit.

He was rather animated about the situation with the "pinch" I have going on at C3-C4 and found it hard to beleive that all of the other doctors downplayed the potential danger and significance of it. He also told me flat out that I was not to do ANY snow shoveling.

As far as change to meds - have said that we would see how the ESI's go .... didn't change any of my regimen with the exception of increasing my Fentynl to 1 patch every 2 days instead of every three days.

It was very refreshing to work with a doc who wasn't at all trigger shy about the level of meds that I am on .... and addressed both a short term and long term plan to get me in less ongoing pain.

He also entiriely supporting my need to be on SSD and documented the "patient can not work" in his records.

I feel like I just hit the doctor lottery!

Every once in a while - something good happens ...
It just doesn't happen by doing nothing but waiting ...

Take a chance .... you maybe suprised at the results!

The saga continues - as It does for all of us!

Warmest Regards - on another cold day - Hope everyone is doing as well as can be leveraged!

Well today I got my first ESI ... Decided to see how the lumbar went before I turned my new doc loose on my neck. I must say that you can tell when a doctor has experience at doing something and when he doesn't.

I have had a couple of spinal taps before that were terrible painful experiences ... I was expecting this lumbar ESI to similar .... but ya know what ... I was a piece of cake for both physician and patient (me). I have had about a 80% reduction in my low back pain and some of the numbness in my foot and tib fib area is diminished. I can actually get up today without having to yell in pain!!

Next week ... I get another dose in my back and we start on my neck!! Its great to have something beside more and/or stronger opiates to count on for relief ... in this case so far ... this intervententional technique has helped.

On the meds front - we decided to drop the Fentanyl patches and head back towards MScontin 30mg BID. I have found the patches to be inconsistant based on the manufacturer and delivery method (gel vs. adhesive matrix). The cost is just simply rediculous. Last RX was over $600.00 for #15.

Hard to believe that something good happened today.
Maybe It will start a trend?

Hope everyone is having a tollerible day,

  • Dave,

Even though the shot seems to not be working, you are more upbeat than you have been in a long time! That is a move in the right direction. Right?

Fingers staying crossed that things will continue to look up for ya darlin!!

  • I hope you are feeling better. I noticed you mentioned heat, but adding ice to the injection site has always been more helpful for me. Normally I stay awat from ice because it can cause me severe muscle spasms, but something is different about those inj. site and the area surrounding it.

I'm not sure if the MScontin 30mg BID is equal to the patch in regards to pain relief and don't know if the cross tolerance is going to be enough to help you remain comfortable. If you find yourself feeling worse instead of better it might be a good idea to contact your new Dr.Often they will start you at a lower level with these medications to see how your body reacts to the medication. I hope you feel better soon!!
