We are introducing a new kind of Spine-health Forum!
What – a special type of forum called a “Sponsored Forum”:
Spine-health is testing a new type of forum that gives Spine-health forum members special access to select resources around a particular topic. These select resources may be company or physician/hospital employees or consultants who have expertise on a particular spine topic. These resources will be accessible only in a specially designated area of the forums, noted as “ABC Topic (sponsored)”.
Our first sponsored forum will be “Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction – pain from lower spine to upper leg (sponsored)”, sponsored by a company that makes a minimally invasive device for use in sacroiliac joint surgery.
Currently, we do not provide an appropriate way for companies or physicians/hospitals to communicate and engage with our forum users about spine conditions, diagnosis or treatments options that may be helpful.
This company makes a surgical implant that treats chronic low back pain stemming from the sacroiliac joint (in the hip/pelvis area). The sacroiliac joint is not well known among doctors and surgeons as a source of pain and isn't always examined when a patient comes in with ongoing low back pain.
We wanted to test the concept of creating more awareness about this condition and treatment options by engaging our forum community.
If this test goes well, Spine-health will be able to invite other experts to engage in a similar manner with our forum community and give us special access to information that we hope can help.
How – Format and Ground Rules:
The idea is to create a forum folder about the topic, mark it as "sponsored", and allow company designated reps to post and respond to posts within that forum. Anyone posting from the company will have an email signature that identifies who they are and their credentials. They will not post specific medical advice, just as no other forum poster can. Company reps will not be permitted to post in any other forum folders except their own.
The company folks have agreed to respond to posts and post relevant topics at least twice per week. The posts can be about ANY topic related to sacroiliac joint issues, not just about surgery or their device. Once per month, they will invite one of their doctors (from various specialties, such as physiatry or surgery) to hold an "office hour", where that doctor will be online and available to respond to posts in real time; forum community will be invited to attend.
Forum members who have been diagnosed with sacroiliac joint problems or who have ongoing low back pain that might be sacroiliac in nature are invited and encouraged to participate in this forum and the periodic “office hours”. The purpose is for our forum community to learn more about this less well known condition, how it’s diagnosed, and treatment options including the company’s surgical device. It’s a unique opportunity to be able to ask questions, share thoughts, and learn more from the experts – not something you will find too often on Spine-health or elsewhere.
We ask that forum members follow our regular forum guidelines when participating in this or any sponsored forums and help us create a collegial, open, and positive information sharing experience for all participants. As with all our forums, this forum will be moderated to ensure our guidelines are followed and that we create a good learning platform for our community and for the participating company; irrelevant, inappropriate or overly negative comments will not be answered or will be deleted.
We welcome your questions and comments on this new resource for our forum community! Please post here, and we’ll do our best to answer them and incorporate them, as appropriate, into the implementation of this first sponsored forum. Thank you and we appreciate your feedback.
