Neck pain and nausea????

Hi everyone! I'm 16 months post ACDF C4-6. According to my recent CT C4/5 is fused, C5/6 has not.

I've been in a lot of pain since November and in January got into a car accident (whiplash and all the fun with it). My surgeon gave me Vicoden and Flexeril, which I've been avoiding this past week or so.

Does anyone know if there is any association between cervical pain and nausea???? For the past week, the nausea comes and goes - usually as my pain level changes. This is definitely a new thing. I haven't eaten anything bad - or else the nausea would be consistent.

Sigh....as sick as I am of all of this, as much as I can't wait for the healing to be done....LIFE IS GOOD. I just want to get better already.

Thanks y'all.

  • Sorry I can't be of more help, but I can confirm that there have been times when my pain was so severe that I felt nauseous. I don't think I ever really got sick, but sure felt like it. It is overwhelming.
I've also had, and continue to have, bouts of nausea that are directly related to certain pain medications. It is almost like morning sickness and has no lingering effects. I've had to weigh the benefit of the medication vs the nausea. So far the pain relief I'm receiving is worth the occasional nausea, but my PM doc is working with me to find an anti-nausea remedy to use on the days I am nauseated that doesn't have other bad side effects. No luck so far on that but I'm being proactive and trying some herbal teas that are supposed to help (ginger tea and also a peppermint tea) as well as using ginger root capsules.
    Best wishes.
  • thank you. I've been trying peppermint tea. It helps some. This is really frustrating. I made an appt with my surgeon for next week because it is hard to live like this. My husband needs his wife and my son needs his mom. I've been in and out of pain for so long. The reprieve I had after surgery from April to December was great! It made having pain again this winter harder to deal with. I am not down or depressed or anything but I am a bit discouraged. I stopped taking the Flexeril and Vicoden because they made me a zombie. While I had no pain, I wasn't really aware either. I was like that for months following surgery and NEVER want to repeat the experience.

Thanks for sharing. Its good to know that others get it, though I'm sorry that anyone else is in the same position.

    Thanks again!
  • Before I was put on Lyrica, I would get pain associated with either my neck or back so bad, I actually did toss! I've not had that happen since Lyrica set in. Are you having pain levels high enough to be doing this to you? Sorry you're having nausea, I hate that feeling!

Have you brought this to your doctors attention to see what is going on? I hope you're feeling better soon.

  • I actually have neck pain chronically and it is actually quite bad right at this time. I do get nauseated as well when the pain is worse. In the past or in the beginning stages, I found the nausea to be the main problem, almost masking the actual neck pain part. Therefore I didn't even realize where the nausea and sick feeling was coming from. I think it does have something to do with the inflammation that occurs with the pain.
  • Before my surgery, I often had bouts of dizziness that would cause nausea. These symptoms do come from the tight/spasms in the neck muscles. Now that I'm 3 weeks post-op, I don't have such severe symptoms.

  • Yes, I get that, and what I call my holy trinity: severe neck pain, headache and nausea. I told my PM and he gave me a blank look!
I notice that I also feel pressure in my sinus bones.I just wish someone could diagnose what this syndrome is. They will be giving me a medial branch block at c4,c5,c6,c7 when and if it gets intense again. In the meanwhile, they are doing epidurals in my lumbar spine and now I am plagued with thoracic pain over large areas on my rear flank.
So, do you think you are having a migraine? I have a feeling that the neck pain goes into a headache after a few hours.
