im not sure what went wrong. i had a decompression and fusion at c6 c7 with cage on 28/6/2010 no hard wear. the fusion failed. i saw my consultant a few weeks ago and he wanted me to try and start living a normal life. moving my neck and weaning my self of the collar with view to seing him in 3 months, yeaturday i carried 2 500ml bottles of water and a bag of sugar back from the shops a 2 mile walk, now i am in agony everytime i try to move my head. i cant see my consultant till may, and i was told the other nhs specialists wont see me, i dont know what to do.

  • have you spoken to your consultant and told him how much pain you are in?

If you cannot cope with it, I suggest that you go to your local accident and emergency. They should be able to give you something for the pain, and will probably let your consultant know about your visit. It may get him to see you earlier.

Meanwhile, I wonder if icing would help. Have you tried that?
Sorry I can't offer more help than that.

I do hope that you will feel better very soon.

  • you are in so much pain and that your fusion did not work. I agree with jellyhall - try to insist on at least speaking with your Dr to advise you did as advised and are now in so much pain to maybe speed up your appt. In the meantime I agree with ICE-ICE-ICE .. sounds like you over-did it and maybe inflammed or swollen and the ice hopefully would give you some temporary relief! Hand in there - hope you feel better and can get some relief and your DR will see you sooner!
  • thank you both. iv just put the ice on and took co-codamol, i also have diclafenic, i want to take it but heard it interferes with bone growth, if its not proven i dont think it will hurt to take it as well? any advise? im going to see how the night goes befor i go to a&e.
  • and have been told by my DR, the things that could inhibit bone growth & fusion are NSAIDS like Naproxen, anyting containing Ibuprofen, Steroids, and Nicotine from Smoking or Nicotine substitutes. Some people take/use all of the above and fuse fine and other don't take or use any of the above and still don't fuse so not sure if all is 100% proven or known. I never heard of what you are taking so not sure if they could impact it or not. I take Extra Strength Tylenol or Percocet if really bad and/or Flexeril Muscle Relaxer or Valium if I just want to relax and sleep. Take care - hope you get some relief!
  • miss grumpy, I too am sorry that you are in pain. It sounds to me like you hurt those muscles from carrying those things home from the store yesterday. Whenever I lift anything heavy it puts a strain on the shoulder muscles that lead up to the neck. Sometimes my neck gets so painful it feels as though I have a stick through there holding it together and I have no ROM whatsoever. Even carrying light things (my purse for example) but for long periods of time is enough to bring that pain on in my left side.

I'm not one to utilize the ER for anything other than a true emergency, but.. maybe if you call your Drs office and tell them that you are thinking about going, or that you might have no choice but to go if they can't help you, maybe then they will understand that your pain is serious and you need to be taken seriously.

I think of it like pain medication, and say a person titrates higher and higher until their tolerance is so high that their pain is hard to manage. When we use the ER for pain when it is for emergencies, there is no where further to go. The ER sees this happen all the time and don't always take CP patients seriously, as they don't know us like our Drs do. Of course if your pain is severe and causing you problems with breathing, BP, heart rate, etc., then of course then this becomes a true emergency. I just hate when I hear stories where a persons stress level gets elevated when the ER takes a different approach other than what they might expect, as so often is the case with CP and PM patients.
All my best to you, I truely hope that you have relief soon.
  • What about any muscle relaxants and icing and see if that will help. I think you need to find a good family Dr. Do you have a telephone nurse line in your country? Maybe they could help you with advice or go to a walk in or Urgent or Quick care center if you're in agony. I know ice helps but sometimes a nice hot soak in the tub may help. Hope you feel better. • thank you every one for being so propt with your advice in my hour of need, i realise i did over do it with the shopping and the ice and pain killers really helped . i think my muscles must have gone into spasm, i was affraid i had done some serious damage to the cage thats in there. i thought it might have come out of place or somthing. much better today. thanks every one so much.
