not sure why i won't heal

I hurt my back catching someone from falling in a shower at work. The doctors said I have a lumbar and thoracic sprain. I was injured at the end of January, and I'm still in so much pain. I see a chiropractor 3x a week, but he's not sure why I'm not healing. By the end of the day, I'm almost in tears I'm in so much pain. Sometimes I get sharp pain in my back, and I had sharp pain when I breathed but he adjusted my ribs and I breathe fine now. I still get sharp pain in my back and then this horrible, intense pressure/throbbing/cramping feeling from like the core of my thoracic cavity. My sternum is also very tender if pressed on.

Has anybody else felt like this? Was there anything that helped? I'm on restrictions from the job I was injured at, but workmans comp has been horrible to deal with. I can tell they are putting pressure on the doctors to release my restrictions, even though I can only lift 20lbs without severe pain.

  • Tyrannosaurus,

I use to get similar symptoms and my chiropractor would realign me. Due to fusions and herniated disks, I no longer get adjusted. Have you had an MRI to rule out disk issues? Also has your doctor given you anything for it? Muscle relaxers, NSAIDs to help with spasms or inflammation.

I'm guessing you yanked pretty hard when you caught the guy? It could take months if strained and sprained. I hope you have answers soon.

  • I hope you've had x-rays and an MRI done. When I injured my back at work and had lower back pain and leg pain it showed a herniated disc I had in the MRI and over a year later showed up as Degenerative disc disease caused by the injury and not just normal aging and that was significant with my disability claim and now collecting government disability because of the evidence.

It would be alright if you're having minor discomfort but not being in extreme pain as this needs attention and you need reassessment from your Dr. My Chiropractor wouldn't touch me not knowing if I had a disc herniation or not because they can't see what's going on inside not saying that's the case with you as I'm not a Dr. but you're in pain and need help. • Thank you guys for replying.

They never did any xrays or an mri. I might change doctors since it has been less than 60 days so I can have one not controlled by my employer. The doc gave me synthetic morphine, but won't give me refills.
  • T,

If it were me? I would seek out a spine specialist - a orthopedist spine specialist, or a neurologist so you can get a full exam, and then hopefully further diagnostic testing (MRI/x-ray/CT) whichever the doctor thinks is best. Most do the x-ray and the MRI first. The MRI is great for seeing the soft tissue (disks) to rule that as an issue in or out, and then you will know what is going on.

Hopefully it is just a bad sprain, but better to know for sure. Please let us know how it goes.

  • I am another person with similar pain as you describe. I ask myself the same question to be perfectly honest, when will I heal. The process of getting my diagnostic testing was empowering. I didn't always here what I wanted to hear, but was relieved to at least know what was causing my intense thoracic pain.

Having intense pain began to affect me emotionally, and I talked about it with everyone who would listen.

    Take good care,
