Almost there.....2 weeks 'til surgery

Hello again everyone....you were all so helpful in my last post (about surgical scars) I thought that I would turn to you again with another question. I am 2 weeks away from my 2 step 360 ALIF surgery. I have read the post-op checklist in this forum and it has been a tremendous help. I have made my purchases based on that list and I think I've prepared my family with enough information and tools. I have 3 questions for those of you who have had this major surgery.

1) What was the duration of your stay in the hospital post-op? (I realize everyone heals differently, I'm just looking for average stay.)

2) What did you have (or wish you had) when you were in the hospital to make your stay more comfortable? i.e. socks, blankets, certain pillows, earplugs, snacks(?), things to do/read/watch, etc...

I am super ancy person and I need to keep my brain busy, I have already prepped my iPod and MacBook with music playlists, movies, tv shows, etc... I have saved a ton of books to read and I also crochet and am learning to knit, but I don't know that I'll be up to that post op.

3) What were your experiences post-op in the hospital? Meaning did you feel like yourself in terms of wanting to watch a movie or read a book or even crochet or were you in too much pain/discomfort?

Any help would be awesome! Thanks!

  • To be honest, I didn't do much in the hospital. I slept a lot and watched some tv but could barely get up the energy to update my facebook page. I came prepared but barely did anything. I was in a lot of pain that wasn't being managed due to abnormally low BP and O2 Saturation. I was in the hospital for 5 days but one day I had a migraine and couldn't progress with my therapy at all so I probably could have went home in 4 days otherwise.
