Neck Brace

Hi Everyone,

I've got my lower back fusion out of the way, and scheduled for fusion and surgery on 2 nerves compressing spinal cord on my neck on March 30th. I'm using the list of pre-surgery and post-surgery suggestions already posted at the beginning. I have a question about neck brace. I wore a brace for my lower back for 2 months. Will they discuss a brace for my neck when I go for my pre-op, or should I call my surgeon and ask now? My surgery only pays 80%, so I need to know how much money I'll need for this.

  • Hi Mindy. I was told right up front that I'd be wearing a hard brace for one month and a soft brace after that for two months. So I'd find out now, if for no other reason than so you know what to expect.

I woke up from surgery with my hard brace on, so they put it all in the same surgery billing, I suppose. I never had to "buy" it that I know of, but I do own it.

Let us know what you find out.
  • Hi Mindy,

Some surgeons don't use braces or collars post surgery as it depends on the stability of your neck. If they don't order one don't use one as they actually just weaken the muscles more. But, as Cath said find out up front what your surgeon is suggesting in your case. If it is a financial concern many of those braces can be bought on-line for less money than you are charged. If you take that route don't open it or do anything with it as they like to have a sterile brace and you will preserve that.
