After 6 years of pain and steriods, oral and injection

I finally broke down the other night and went to the ER the neck pain I had was out of control! They did a CT Scan and said I had Neck Cervial Disk Damage. Well I have been on and off steriods, muscle relaxes, anti inflamitorys for many years now. It is a relief to know the problem, but what steps should I take now? Should I allow the doctor to talk me into PT which does nothing for me ( my mom had me doing PT bc she worked at an PT office) and continue meds that only work for a few weeks or months? The pain has gotten so bad I was unable to sleep or completely daily task. It was also causing me to tense up to the point I was getting Migraines daily. Right now the pain has eased up "Some" due to steriods again, and pain meds that have a seditive in them. But once the pain meds wear off I hurt again. I can not continue my life like this. I have to kids and would love to be able to work again. Can anyone give me some advice?

Thanks, Mom2TP

would be have you consulted with a board certified Neurosureon or Orthopedic Surgeon and discussed the results of your diagnostics and asked for their reccomendations. If not ... this is a common next step. I would suggest this before undertaking just PT as PT could lead to further aggravation of the conditions or even do additional damage.

Who has been managing your situation up to this point? I would ask that prationer who they would suggest you see first - next .... referral to a pain specialist maybe appropriate also.

    Keep us posted ...

Welcome to Spine-Health  Please read the linked guidelines!!

  • First let me say welcome to spine-health. It looks like you have had some of the conservative treatment thus far, whom has been ordering this treatment for you? It is hard to say what you should do without knowing the extend of the damage to the disc, but only a doctor can really give you that information. If I was in your shoes I would see a board certified spine surgeon. Just because your seeing one doesn't meant they are doing surgery. If the first thing they say is you need surgery then get multiple opinions. A good one will more than likely order a MRI to get a better picture and then try some conservative treatment first such as the right physical therapy, injections and meds. Of course there are other things such as accupuncture, message therapy, traction and the list goes on. But first I would think they need to know the condition of your disc before proceeding any further and a CT is not the best test for that. Look in the FAQ section and there is a link to a article on "preparing to meet with a spine surgeon". I think you will find that information very useful.

AS far as the pain coming back when the meds wear off I went through that, but it does give the doctors information on your situation believe or not. If you do see a surgeon or whomever you see be sure to have a detailed account of all the treatments you have had thus far. Please keep a journal of the type of pain your having such as burning, stabbing, aching, pins and needless and what makes it better and what makes it worse. Ice and heat should give you some relief till you find a doctor. Use our search feature and you can find doctors dealing in spine issues, located at the top of the page.

Just thought I would stop by and welcome you to spine-health. If I can be of any assistance don't hesitate to pm me. Take care and keep us posted on how you do.
  • Well so far I have been seeing my family doc. I have been with her for 6-7 yrs. For a very long time we have thought that the pain was caused by my muscles tensing up from stress. But as time has gone on the pain and reoccurance of pain has returned more often. I am going to do some calling around to orthopedisit and spinal surgons on Monday. I can not continue to stay on the med for pain the ER gave me bc it knocks me on my butt and I CAN NOT be having that. I am going to get a copy of the CT Scan to take along with me. As far as PT I was being treated with anti flamtories at the time. What I think has happened is yes I've had problems for yrs, but they got worse of the last 2.5 yrs after my ex threw me into the side of a car and I hit the side of my head. To help with pain I use an ice pack 20 mins before I sleep to help reduce some swelling. I can not lay with a small towel rolled up under my neck to relieve pressuse bc it causes more pain. And the CT scan was extreamly painful bc I had to lay flat and it made the pain worse. I just want to get back to being pain free for more then a few days, or wks.

    Thanks Mom2TP
