Difficulty swallowing 5 weeks post op after 3 level ACDF

It has been almost 5 weeks since my 3 level ACDF and fusion. The NS had me start PT 10 days after surgery and lifted all restrictions including driving 4 weeks after surgery. I still use a soft collar while driving because of insecurity. I feel soreness and stiffness around my neck muscles but the biggest problem I have is swallowing. I can eat normal food after a lot of chewing and washing it down with water or soda but I always feel like there is a small lump in my throat. Sometimes I choke while swallowing pills or capsules. The scar on the incision site feels very lumpy. I wonder if it has something to do with it. Anyone else feel this way so long after neck surgery?

  • yes, I will be 7 wks post op C-5, C-6 fusion on march 23rd and still have trouble swallowing. I can't swallow capsules very easily and have to chew and chew my food with lots of water. I still have a lump on the left side of my incision since that is the side the doctor went in on. I think it takes a long time for the swallowing to resume to normal. For the first two weeks I could only drink smoothies - no solid food, then started with pasta.
  • I have had very different out comes with the surgeries. On one surgery I came out and was eating a roast beef sandwich within a few hours of surgery. On a different surgery I had a long go with the swallowing issues. I finally had a swallow test performed at 6 months to find my hardware was causing the issue and had it removed. But i did have bridge from older hardware and there just wasn't room. But, if i was in your shoes I would wait till the three month mark and if your still having issues then see about getting a swallow test to be sure of the issue. It is possible to still have some inflammation from the surgery.
  • Thanks tamtam and Geministar. I saw a ENT specialist a couple of days ago and tomorrow I am going in for swallowing test x-rays.
