Headache when lower back pain flares?

Has anyone else experienced headaches that occur only when there is an episode of aggravation to sciatic nerve?
I do not have any DDD of neck or any other neck issues. I injured my L5-S1 18 months ago and am now a month from an ALIF.. I have noted a severe one-sided headache any time my back has been irritated - excess overuse, following procedures, and postsurgical. My doctors all know it occurs, it has been documented (occured postop, severe enough for nurse to call surgeon during evening), and no one has an explanation or remedy.
Wouldn't you know it, I must have been up too much, done something, as I experienced pain during the night - haven't had much in 2 weeks - and I awoke with an awful headache. Pain meds haven't made any difference and I'm miserable. I've spent my day resting but neither my sciatic pain or headache have eased. It's just like it would happen prior to surgery.
Ideas anyone?
