Hello :H . Well I saw my surgeron last week. The first thing they wanted to know was if the injection work, NOPE!
I told him that my quality of life is getting bad. I told him that even getting, in, and out of the car is bad. I have found that standing, or sitting for even a small amount of time is horrible too. I can't even excercise, it is getting VERY depressing. The pain is so bad :''( .

We discussed what has went on over the last 6 years, and he is afraid that I may have permanet nerve damage now because this should have been treated long ago. He didn't even want to fuse at first, we did the discetomy first, then the injection. He also was upfront, and told me that he will not say that I will be 100% cured. He said that excersice after surgery is a very big thing. If this helps even 25% more, I will be fine with that. I just want to feel better. On top of this I have also been told that I most likely have fibromyalgia (sp), with chronic fatigue syndrome. I go see a specialist for that this week, and a gastro doctor for ongoing problems! I am a walking medical case at 30 years old :T . I used to be so hopeful about things, and I am not anymore. I am actually going to start counseling in a few weeks. I do take meds for depression.

Okay, I know I am writing a book her, but I was just wondering something. I have been taking tramadol, and hydrocodone 7.5/500 mg for awhile now. The hydro works for maybe a hour 1/2. My PM doctor put me on Oxycontin 20 mg. Well this med is a killer, i have to cut it to peices.(That is some strong pill, very hard to cut!!!!). Anyway, this med is making me feel horrible! I am very sick to my stomach, headaches, you name it. The problem is with the hydro, I get hives. I am very sensetive to meds. Just wondering how, and what you take to deal with the pain.

Thanks for reading, and any input, good or bad, Send it my way!!!!!

  • ALIF here ALIF there ALIF all over the place on this forum ....maybe its because i need one soon? i am also thinking is the ALIF the new laminectomy of the 2000s ..?? food for thought ..laminectomies were the in thing in the 1990s and now they are fround up on as they can do so much damage and they leave the spine unstable ..hence the need later in life for a fusion of some description ..but as i have seen lately is ALIF surgery .lets hope that this post is not resurrected in about 10 years and talked about ! like a premonition....i have just notices something serious wrong on your post !!! please don't cut the hard Oxycontin they are long lasting drugs that brake down in your system .they are not meant to be crushed of chewed or cut ..if you need fasted pain relief there is another form of Oxycontin called oxynorm .i take both so i feel i can mention this .i cart talk about dose for you but i take 400mg that's 4x80mg of the long acting type and 6 or 8 or the 20mg oxynorm capsules .maybe you should ask you doctor for some ??? what every you do don't tel him that you have been cutting them down !!and you will get used to the Oxycontin or oxynorm from a not feeling too well side within a few weeks ..they are a fantastic pain killer but you can build a tolerance to them very fast so be careful

  • I am nervous about the oxycontin. I dont want to build a tolerance to them, and get addicted! I am in so much pain that I am needing them. I had no idea that I couldnt take half, they arent ER?!. My doctor told me to take them twice a day with the hydrocodone. I do that. I have never had to take this stuff like this before. The pain is unbearable.

  • Jeannie-
I am hoping I will have the same change as you! I would love to have 50% pain gone!!!! Thanks so much for your words, sometimes they help even more than some people know.
  • I haven't been cutting the oxy in half, They are hard to cut!!! I was wondering why they were like that! Well, I am taking the full pill now.
Thanks for the info on all of this!!!!
  • Please don't cut your Oxycontin in half - I assume you are on the light pink ones? The manufacturer of Oxycontin I thought was supposed to make them unbreakable for the purposes of preventing street abuse. At that dose fortunately, you won't OD, but it certainly can explain your side effects and why you feel they are "so strong". If you where to be on a higher dose of Oxycontin - crushing them and breaking them can actually be fatal!! Usually, and your pain doctor so by all means confirm with him/her; the Oxy prescription is intended to be taken at very even intervals, and the Vicodin is typically used when that pain "breaks through" you every twelve hour dosing of your Oxy. There may be exceptions, i.e. if you wake in the morning with severe pain you can take the quicker acting Vicodin and the Oxycontin together, put please clarify if you can with you prescribing doctor. Usually the onset of any effects of Oxycontin (both pain-relief and side-effects) are slow because it is extending release; and you shouldn't get any headaches from it or nausea from it - that just may be from dumping the entire oxycontin into your system. If you stomach is sensitive, to try to take it with some food..some pharmacists do recommend avoiding grapefruit juice.
You also recommended being on antidepressants, make sure you know the doctor that prescribed your tramadol and the doctor that prescribed the antidepressants know about the other prescription; tramadol can have a bad reaction with some anti-depressants called serotonin syndrome.
Please check out the "what to expect from surgery" section for input about your ALIF, as well as the pre-op need list and thread. Just please, take it easy the first 3 months.
