Bulge and pinch nerve at L-5

I am new to this board and totally STRESSED. Last year I started to have sharp pain in my low back and burning pain down my leg. I went to a pain management doctor who said I had a slight bulge. He insisted on doing acupuncture first, I said fine. (insurance did not cover) and than he would do an epidural. I had a fight with him, as I was crying in pain. He never did the epidural (another long story)

So I had to come to Florida, south of St. Augustine and stay with my Mom, the pain was unbearable.
I saw a spine specialist at Shands in Jacksonville who said to get 2-3 epidurals, if it does not work, than I would need a discectomy.
I had the first epidural in August of 2010. It did not help. My Mom called to schedule my 2nd epidural and the receptionist said, your daughter is very thin, we don't like to give too many shots. I am 5'4 and 100 lbs.
I called the Spine Specialist at Shands and the nurse gave me a name of another Pain Management place to go to. I went to this other place. The epidurals did not help, the pain management doctor told me Shands is a horrible hospital in a bad neighborhood and to go see some other ortho (who I looked up online and has some lawsuits)

So I go to two different neurosurgeons, they tell me try PT, acupuncture, even a chiropractor.
I try PT, does not help (I have a bad foot, so my gait is off for a long time, just had my 4th foot surgery and walking better)
2 weeks ago, my regular doctor, sent me for an open MRI, where you sit down and they take pictures when you are bending etc.
I sent the MRI results to the one neurosurgeon who was very thorough, he called me and said the Bulge is worse, to call him if I have muscle weakness.
I was dumb struck. I can't sit for more than 10 minutes, I have been in bed for over a year. My muscles are weak. My physical therapist said that I am hypermobile and any traction machines may cause something else to go out of place.
I left a message for the neurosurgeon yesterday, no call back. I feel like this neurosurgeon just does not want to do surgery on my back. Do I want surgery? Of course not, but I have NO LIFE!! I am always home. My pain is getting worse and worse.
All I hear is Don't have surgery, but nobody gives me any other options! I am so stressed and do not know anyone around here. I tried to go to the MayoClinic in Jacksonville, but they are not taking any new patients. I really do not want to go to Jacksonville, its over an hour north of where I am and sort of scary to be that far from a hospital you had surgery at.

  • Sorry to hear what you're going through but hope you get a good Surgeon soon. Have you seen a Neurologist for the weakness? I know it must be hard to walk after foot surgery but hopefully you can walk now even with a walker to build up your strength. I hope you get the help you need soon. Take care. Charry

  • I feel your pain. I was blown off by multiple doctors multiple times telling me o it's a strained muscle jsut take some tylenol and strech. Eventually i got fed up and couln't deal with the pain so i didn't leave till they started actually doing something, i got kind of angry but it was well deserved. So i am now on 750mg hydrocodines. They make the pain bearable but it isn't completely gone. But way beter than before. I don't have any real advice considering i am new to this. I am 18 and do not remember hurting my back. All i can really say is don't stress to much it doesn't help just be persistant. Are you on any pain medication? Also i have leg weakness, no numbness but i used to be able to squat 400 lbs and now i have trouble going down stairs.....
  • I went to another neurosurgeon and he thinks it is the sacroiliac joint. I am going to physical therapy, the PT thinks I have it also, she said there is no shot or quick fix for it. Anyone else have this problem?

  • Good that you've seen another neurosurgeon and now starting physio.

I went through a very frustrating time for years trying to get doctors to acknowledge that my pain was severe and that I needed help. Eventually I found a very good surgeon and my pain is 80% gone.

Hang in there and don't give up on getting the help that you need.
