BGS's: Do they really work?

I'm just over 3 weeks post-op and feel pretty good after having ACDF c5 thru c7. Since the representative showed up at my room with a Bone Growth Stimulator I have been wearing this thing 24x7 with the exception of showers. I have my hopes up that given they used a bracket with screws, this BGS thingy, and taking vitamins that promote, in part, bone health I'm holding out hope I could be fused by 8 weeks post-op. Doc seems to think this could be a possibility. I'm curious as to who has used a BGS immediately following surgery, wore it as much as I'm wearing it, and what his/her healing timeline was for fusion. I was told studies have shown these devices speed up the healing process.

I used one with my cervical fusion and lumbar fusion. These were done by two different surgeons and both felt the studies showed BGS can help bone fusion. So since insurance paid for the majority I was all for it! The lumbar one was more a pesky version whereas the cervical neck one just hung around my neck.

  • Interesting you had the same two exact surgeries I had albeit in reverse order. I had the foraminotomy first, then ACDF two years later. I'm curious as to why you had to have a forminotomy AFTER the ACDF. I was told this would cure things once and for all after the forman.. didn't work. I can't go through that again! How long did the c5-c7 take to fuse using the BGS? And, in your answer can you please comment on how much you wore the BGS?
