hi all,

i had injury 2001, and recently i had MRI done 01/2011 and i had L4-5 bulging disc. L5-S1 there is a broad-based left paracentral disc protrusion which measures approximately 6mm in ap diameter which effaces the anterior thecal sac and impinges the descending left s1 nerve root.resulting mild to moderate central canal stenosis. there is mild to moderate left neural foraminal stenosis with possible impingement of the exiting left L5 nerve root. the right neural foramen is mildly narrowed.

i want to know if i get the first epidural injection can but didnt help me can i opt out not to get anymore. and can they give me a different kind treatment or surgery? please help any one know help me.thx

  • Jennytran,

I can only go by my experience. When I had my first herniated disk and was doing the conservative treatment to try and avoid surgery, I was prescribed to take the 3 shot series of the ESI's. The first one for me did nothing for me, so I called my surgeon and told him so, and that I wasn't interested in having the other two given the cost and lack of help. My surgeon had no problem with me not taking the last two. So I didn't get them.

Each doctor is different. Also too if you are with Pain Management, you have to be careful as most have you sign a contract, and if you break it (refusing the 2 shots qualifies for most), they can drop you. So in the end, it depends on your doctor or your PM.

  • The 2nd shot is more effective then 1st, JMO.
Now like Brenda said, if its a pain mgmt doc many times they want you to participate in alternative treatments, which may include various therapies, including epidurals. Many do not want to just prescribe meds.

With that said if you have valid concerns or reasons for not wanting to continue with this course of treatment, you really need to be open & honest with your doctor. Ultimately its your decision.

Surgery should always be last resort as the results are almost never guaranteed.

    Good luck!

  • hi brenda,

thanks you for your advise. i had epidural injection back 2001 when i was first start accident at work. so the epidural give me very sick and didnt help my pain at all. so since august 2010 i had chronic back pain and to my buttock, thigh down all the way to my ankle. so i just affraid getting it and if doesnt help me the first shot and i have to go thru three shot until the doctor qualify me another treatment. i dont want go suffer three shots and doesnt help me.
  • Jenny,

I didn't mention it as we were talking pain reduction. On my first one I got so light headed they made me lay down for a while. Now it only lasted 45 minutes, but that was weird. Mine was in the cervical spine by the way. I've had 2 spinal taps in the past and it didn't bother me, so if they say shots for my back, I will give it a try, but optimistic of course. :)

Interesting...and I thought I was just weird. You are the only other one that had a physiological reaction to the shots, now I know I wasn't weird. Or maybe like me, others did and never said anything?

  • Virginia,

I just gave up on the shots. You would know better than I since you didn't give up on them! (G)

The rest what Virginia posted, so so so true!! We are always the customer is what I like to say. We go to the experts, but if we don't agree after a frank discussion with our expert, we find another, and if it's the same or nearly so result, we are probably wrong. :) Good post Ms. Virginia!!

  • Hi; and if i'm reading correctly, you are saying you got hurt at work?
IS work comp paying for the shots?

Ifs that the case, you need to do what w/c says or they can refuse to cover you anymore for refusing treatment.

Unless the doctor states that these will not help you.

    Good luck.

  • Hi Jim,

thanks you for your advise, well first i went to orthopaedic and he did request epidural injection but the insurance had deny so my doctor said he can do anything since they approve me to difference pt clinic. so i still being going but doesnt help me at all either. so i just went to different specialist he is nuerosurgeon and he also said i need to try epidural injection and he will request for me epidural injection and nerve conduction test.i am still waiting for approval. also six months ago i had hysterectomy because my endometroisis. now current my concern is about pinch nerve on L5-S1 . cause i being having urgen bladder and back pain with pelvis cramp. so i had told orthopaedic and nuerosurgeon but they said the urgen bladder and pelvis cramp not relate to my bulging disc. i am very afraid nerve damage.but since my MRI show that I got Impinge on s1 nerve root and L5. so i dont know what to do now. just seat and wait
