Having second discectomy next week, open this time.

I had a microdiscectomy on l5s1 a year and a half ago. I have been dealing with a recurrent herniation that caused pain, numbness, etc.

My surgeon set me up for a second discectomy, this time it is open. He wants to do the laminectomy because it will allow him better access to clear out scar tissue and more disc, which seems logical to me. He said even though it sounds a lot more invasive it should be the same recovery.

Anyone have experiences with this type of operation?

  • I cant tell you too much about the surgery, but I believe when I had my micro D almost a year ago they did a partcial laminectomy to get at the nerve. Mine reherniated right away. How long did your last before reherniating and has it been better or worse since surgery?
