Hi I'm Randy,
I recently joined this site, and I need some input on an up coming surgery. My Doctor said I need a 5 level Fusion in my neck and He also said they would have to put a rod in my neck to help support it. I am running in circles here chasing my tail because I'm not sure what to do? Is there anyone on here that has had this done before? If so could you please give me some advice as to what I should do? I have been fighting with this for over 10 yrs. I also have Scoliosis in my lower spine and 5 Disc's down there that no surgeon will touch, I've been told they are to far gone to help me???
Randy R.

  • HI Randy,

First let me say welcome to spine-health. Have a look around and you will find many here whom have gone through surgery. What type of surgery will they be doing what is the name of it? Will the surgery be done anterior or posterior? How many opinions have you gotten for this surgery. Doing 5 levels in the cervical spine is a large surgery, and there isn't many member whom with 5 levels fused. Doing more is not always better. Keep in mind for every level they fuse you loose ROm(range of motion). Have to you talked to the surgeon about the success rate he/she has had with this type of surgery? What type of bone grafting will they be using? Multilevel fusion have a higher failure rate, so be sure he/she is protecting against this as you don't want to go through this again. Also have you discussed healing times and if you will be able to return to work or not? Be sure the doctor you are using is fellowship trained in this procedure. If you only have one opinion i strongly suggest you get 2 if not 3 opinions on surgery. I myself am a 4 level fusion and don't have much ROM left.

Just thought I would stop by and welcome you to spine-health. If there is anything I can do don't hesitate to pm me take care.
  • Wanted to welcome you here to spine health. You have come to the right place for support. I have lower lumbar issues, so am unable to help you with cervical problems, but there are many neckies here who will chime in soon, I'm sure.

You definately have a lot on your plate.Have you had multiple opinions from spinal specialists for your neck and lumbar area?

Wishing you all the best in your journey.

  • Hi tamtam, they would have go in through the back of my neck, I have had 2 fusions done already and I have gotten 4 different opinions thus far and most of the Doctors won't do any more surgeries on my neck. This Doctor that I am now seeing comes with high ratings (if that is right). I have levels C4-5 & C6-7 fused already and now the C3-4 is bad and so is the C5-6, plus three in my Thoracic T1 through T3 need to bed done also. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks Very Much,
    Randy R.
  • I also have had many problems and a recent fusion of c-5 to c7...my lumbar spine is bad, with no surgeries possible as the fusion would be to 7 vertebrae and that isn't possible.
I suggest more opinions from specialists and this would really be a traumatic surgery.
I wish you the best and hope that you find relief.
I just joined this site also...and I think it's a good thing, cause there's alot of miserable people out there and I think only people who experience this sort of thing really understand.
    Good luck!
  • First off, like others, Welcome to Spine Health! I've had fusions at C5/6 and C6/7 and for whatever reasons the last fusion fubar'd the whole shibang. I should know next month if a redo is on the plate, and if so, it will be adding levels.

Like Tamtam said, the more levels, the higher failure rate. I am glad to see you have and did get other opinions. It seems that once you go above 3 levels, the success rate goes down more than up. Please keep us posted on how it goes.

    PCTF C4 - T2, Laminectomies C5, C6 & C7. Severe Palsy left arm/hand.
  • New to this site and I think I just sent you a private message..did you get it? Damn technology can be confusing until you know the site! I put you on the buddy list...hope it went through!
