hip, lower back and leg pain

I have been dealing with back problems since I was hurt at work in 2006. I was diagnosed with herniations at L1-L2 and L3-L4 and a annular fissure at L4-L5.
In February of this year, my back went out again, I don't know what caused it but the pain was terrible for a few months. It's starting to get better now but I have some new symptoms that are very painful. My left hip feels like it's cramping all the time. (my right side is typically where my sciatica was) If I lay on my left side for more than a few minutes the pain is soo intense I want to cry. I wake up a few nights a week with charlie horses in my left leg and if I sit too long, my whole left leg goes numb. My right leg is also affected but not more than it was before.
I was wondering if anyone could give their opinion as to what they think is happening to me.
Thanks so much.

  • I forgot to mention that when my back goes out I also get very crooked and have a very difficult time walking.
  • hi there. Sorry you are having various pains. Are you seeing an orthopedic spine dr. or neurosurgeon? Both of these are specialists in the back.

I don't know that anyone here can tell you what is happening, specifically.

But I can offer a few suggestions. First, see a doctor. Only the doctor can answer what's best for your specific scenario.

I dealt with back issues for 17+ years. I would have flare ups. I would go to PT, continue the PT exercises and it would help. I would have another flare up and the doctor would give me prescription NSAID (anti-inflammatory) to help reduce inflammation to get my some relief.

For the back and leg pain...you may be having some inflammation from either overdoing it, bending too much, twisting too much, lifting too much or wrong way.

For the hip, it could be your back is hurting and you are compensating. If it's that, which a doctor will help assess, physical therapy can help with body mechanics through exercise.

I hope this gives you some ideas.
  • I also have lumbar disc problems. MY hips hurt all the time and i have burning and pain in my legs as well.I've started having right leg issues that my leg turns inward when i walk.My hips cramp up on me all the time and it gets worse when i walk. I used to be able to lay on my side up then i started getting bad pain that would go down my leg when i did. I now have some nerve damage in my one leg and may have some now in my other but i need another test to determine that. I'm crooked as well,i've been told from the muscles tightening up to try and keep the disc in place.
  • You must be my other half. You have the left sided pain, I have the right. My hip is the brain of my pain, low back is bad, but my leg is begining to be the worst. I can relate to your pain & I know how you're feeling. I am so sorry. I am also seeking insight on what is going on with me. If you discover anything please let me know.
  • Hi all-I am a Spine-Health alumni----2 spinal fusions in 2 years----my thigh has been bothering me,and just thought I would join the chats again!
  • Hi and welcome to spine-health. I also was wondering if you have seen a fellowship trained ortho or neurosurgeon?

When I lie down, I can only lie on my sides with pillow between knees. After an hour to hour , I must get up or turn over and reposition pillows due to an ache in my hip, as well as back pain.

Tammy, my left foot now turns inward. I also find that in the last month or so I am increasingly unsteady on my feet, and need to grab hold of something to avoid falling. My toes on my feet sometimes curl right under with a spasm that contracts my toes and I cannot uncurl them for sometime.

Please keep us updated on how you are doing.
