Hi - new to forum here. 48 yo female who was recently diagnosed with os odontoideum incidentally after motorcycle accident. I have been very active my whole life - skiing, riding, watersports, etc. and never had a clue that I had this deformity. Neurosurgeon measured it yesterday and said it is 9.8 and that stability surgery is needed. I am freaking out reading these forums. He didn't act like it was a big deal - 3-6 wks. & I'd be back to work (I have a desk job). I'm not sure what type of stabilization he has planned but it will be posterior and C1-C2 with bone graft. I have an MRI tonight & then we have another appt. on Monday am to discuss next steps.
I am mostly asymptomatic with the exception of some hand numbness for the past 20 yrs. which I had attributed to carpal tunnel or something else all these years. I don't have much pain but do get headaches often. I don't want to have surgery if I'm not in pain but I also don't want to become paralyzed or not do any of my normal activities.
Any comments or information would be greatly appreciated. Wondering how awful surgery was, how long in hospital, how long I will not be able to care for myself, etc. Ugh.
