Neurontin and Sex :(

Hello all,
I will start this off by saying sorry if there is too much information.
As you know..I have been doing an increase in Neurontin..since Friday I went up from 300 to 500. I have handled every emotion terribly. As I have mentioned before in other posts, I am incredibly sensitive to these types of medications. I have been very short tempered, crying and just feeling really BLAH! Then I *tried* to have sex last night. (I already have monumental problems because of the vag fissures and all the xylocaine..bs) but anyways..it was like I was outside my body guys! It was feaky..and I SO wanted nothing to do with it.."just hurry up already"... THis is not me. Does this feeling stay around? I just wasn't in the mood at all. THere HAS been a lot of bad things happen around here this weekend so I know I'm stressed about that but usually having sex is a de-stresser for me. IT was weird. NOt even a peep out of me.
I didn't like it. :(
Is this what Neurontin is going to do to me? I was fine sexually at 300 (and I still don't notice any difference in pain control..he wants me to go all the way up to 900mg)
Is this my life now?
A divorce will surely be on the way. There is only so much he can take. All the things I can't do now..we only got married 5 years ago...and well...nevermind. THanks for listening. :( *off to cry some more*

  • Daisy Mae:

I began my journey with Neurontin last Tuesday. My dosage was 300mg for three days, up to 600mg for three days, and now 900mg a day until I complete the bottle and have a return visit with my surgeon.

My symptoms are similar. I feel "weird" at times and short on patience. Wish I could comment on the sex part, but I had my cancerous prostate cut out two years ago and they were not able to "spare the nerves." Sex is a memory.

I'll let you know how I feel/behave in a weeek or so after I obtain altitude with Neurontin.
  • Oh airborne..I am so sorry! I feel like a real jerk for complaing about that :(
I hope the neurontin helps you :)
  • Daisy mea,

So sorry to hear what happened. Have you tried other nerve pain medications? I've only used Lyrica, as my surgeon put me on it over a year ago, and it's working great, so no other nerve pain medications for me.

If it is your mood (drive) that is at issue, you also might want to express this to your doctor. Depression does happen with some nerve pain medications. Maybe they can try (another nerve pain medication) something else?

  • Thanks Brenda :)

We started out with Lyrica but I had a BAD reaction. I kept passing out (one time my husband found me outside the bathroom door..he was in there bathing the babies and heard me fall) and the other times I was with my kids :( That is a secret...I never told him. I just told him I need to stop this med..and we went back in and they switched me to Neurontin.
It's really hard to say if it's drive related. I *tried* again last night (hey what can I say I'm persistent..lol) and it was almost a carbon copy. I *think* the biggest problem is..I am so unimagineable stressed about my general anesthetic on Thursday. I go fo rmy mri of my neck and back but they have to do a general. NOt sure if you would remember I had all those heart issues and they weren't sure if it was safe for me to be put under so I had to see a cardiologist ..my bp was really high..I have gotten the clearance but no one has any answers. So I really don't feel safe going to sleep you know? I am terrified of dying on the table..or in this case the god awful magnet from hell..
I just pray I wake up ok and I'm still the same me. The anethetist felt is necessary to go over some scenarios with me..and he really did WAY more harm to me then good.
Maybe when it's all over..and my 12 year old starts acting like she's 12 again I will be *normal* (or somewhat) again.
    Thanks!!!!!
  • Daisy Mae,

Passing out, not a side affect I would accept either! Wow! I think another pain med for nerves is Cymbalta? There has to be something that would work?

As for your heart issues (and BP) with anesthesia, yeah I think I would be a bit freaked out! Even those of us without issues can die on the table thanks to all the chemicals the Anesthesiologist puts into us, but knowing you have issues, that has to be a major stress-or!

I guess you'll know if pre MRI stress is the issue if "all is well" after with your hubby. If you find that is the case, communicate that with your spouse so he understands what was going on. If problems persist, then you might want to get with your doctor to see if there is anything they can do or recommend. Gentle support *HUGZ*

  • Neurontin and Lyrica are in the same family.

Both meds cause head games to some. Most can't live without the nerve med. So they take many other meds to combat the side effects of the nerve med.

Orgasm can almost be impossible even if stimulated greatly. At some point you give up when your partner had enough.

Stick with the med hold off on the pleasure area. By dealing with the med the med learns how deal with the pleasure department. If you get it down it can be great!

The mood issues is another issue. Dealing with pain makes you a different person. Your partner needs to fall in love with that new person or it won't work. NOW! You your self can improve the new person you are through taking your meds and learning to cope with the pain. Easier said then done. I stuggle with same issue.
I have the 1 take back rule. Everyday I get to take back one bad thing that slipped out of my stupid mouth do to my pain. The take back doesn't have to be directly after the issue but if additional accure then I know I'M not handling my pain correclty. If you only have that one your spouse needs to give in and understand regardless. Kiss and make-up.
FYI- Thats also how they learn to deal/understand your chronic pain.

  • I love your "take back" method! I without realizing it, try to do exactly that! My hubby knows when my pain ramps up, I am not a happy person to be around, and he seems to understand those "oops" comments.

Sex, my hubby definitely gets the 'most enjoyment' out of it. I go along, but there are times I put a stop sign to doing it. I guess I am losing some of the 'happy' sensation too, as I don't get the kick out of it that I use to. Don't know if that is an age thing, or a spine thing. :) Daisy...or a Lyrica thing!!!

  • DDD,
Thank you for your suggestions. I will definately bring up the take back option ;) He's pretty good. Really understanding, but sometimes totally clueless. Not thinking about me and my limitations REALLY upsets me, just automatically thinking that I can do something..say go shopping :(
GUys..I am terrified about the sex thing. I KNOW I shouldn't be, and ddd you really really made sense when you said to just hold off on the pleasure part. However I seen my pcp 2 days ago and I mentioned to her what a totalt whack job I have become in a matter of weeks and she was worried. She told me to NOT increase my meds more and give my body a chance to get used to it and if I am still freaking out I should decrease it. Ugh. WTH?
Cymbalta. I have a huge sample supply sitting in my closet..atleast 300 pills..seriously. The one neuro gave it to me and shooed me off. I then had to ask my cardio IF I should/could take it and he said NO WAY. He said it is known for increasing bp and irregular rhytm and I can't chance it.
I had my mri yesterday with the general. I am still not good. I feel dreadful and my poor throat has been put through the ringer and I feel as though I've been run over...a few times. Of course my husband took today off.. only to BRING THE CAR IN! So I have been with the babies all day pretty much..out of my mind all loppy from yesterday. Been crying alot.
I know I need to calm down. I am just really upset that this is my life now. I feel like a little kid having a temper tantrum. I put my big girl pants on every morning..do what I gotta do, take care of my family but damn it I'M PISSSED! Pardon my language.
    UGHHHH
Love you guys though *hug* thanks for being here and understanding.
I don't know when I get my results. They did my thoratic (sp?) and my lunbar. I was IN the mri for almost 2 hours :( Good grief.
Does anyone know when I can expect to get the results? I go for an eeg on Tuesday and see the neuro for results next motnh..but I was kind of hoping I could get them earlier from my family dr....what do you think? That's too long for me to wait! I'll eat through the walls by then...
    *chompchomp*
  • I too am on BP meds...and my cardiologist is picky on what I am allowed to take. When I go the the dentist for surgery (root canals and such) I take Lorazepam and what I HATE about it is initially my heart rate goes nuts! Kind of scary if you ask me - then I am fine. The fast/funky heart rate lasts about 15 minutes, then I am good.

As for MRI results, most of mine have been available within 24 to 36 hours. I get them mailed to me if I do a stand up MRI, and if recumbent, I go to the hospital 2 days later to get copies of the reports.

Sex... As for being female *and* a spiney, we have to become creative on "how" we do the happy nasty. I am a trifecta (cervical, thoracic and lumbar), so my hubby and I have worked out a way that we can both get satisfaction out of. You have to experiment, whose on top, sideways, doggy etc. In bed, on the floor, in the hot tub, etc.

I hope you get some good news soon as to what is going on. God, listen to me "good news"....only we with spine issues take a negative MRI as good? Okay, I am officially weird....

  • Being typical male and seeing the word sex, I had to read the post. when I got to part about not allowing you to take cymbalta, wow. I had previously been on nuerontin and lyrica and was changed to cymbalta after some leg swelling issues. Due to the untimely death of my brother at 51 I had my Dr do a heart health check. Both the stress test and EKG came back abnormal. Went to a cardiologist and went through a echo and heart cath. The good news, no blockage but I have recently been diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and hypokenesis of the left ventricle. I'll have to discuss the Cymbalta with him next month. I was having blood pressure issues and he put me on coreg and a diuretic and now my bp is good. Cymbalta has worked for me for over a year, I'd hate to have to go back to one of the other two.

Hang in there daisy mae, I'll pray everything works out for you.

  • Hello all,
Well, I have a confession to make. I had AWESOME sex on Saturday..woo hoo! I'll spare you all the details..hehe but I'm hoping that my little *funk* was/is just stress and I will adjust to the meds.
On another note, something strange has been happening now when I take the Neurontin. About 40 minutes after I take it..I go into Supermommy mode..literally running all over! I'm NOT complaining at all but it's kind of funny. Maybe it's just my body adjusting. I *hope* I can keep some of that energy. I think I will try to increase again but I will do it more gradually this time.
    Love ya guys!!!!! *hugs*
  • The super mom feeling won't last. Thats why I love Lyrica. Many do not get the feeling you and I get. Most say they only experience that feeling with Narcs. In fact when I tell some people they look at you like your nuts. You have to be carefull, because this is where Lyrica and Neurontin can get you into trouble if this is a side effect.

Since the feeling will last for a few days. People tend to want to stop and then increase. Because thats the only way you can get that feeling back. Your system doesn't lesson your tolorance but learns you adjusted dose. So you have to do both stop and then increase. Which is a NO NO!!!!

Not trying to give you a schooling but letting you know there will be a temptation, I think if it does give you that type of feeling.

Cymbalta was the hardest drug I ever had trouble stop taking! This is a hell drug! Great if it works for people an. But if it doesn't and your trial period was long enough look out! I think I could cold stop High dose of OXY and have less problems then a taper plan with Cymbalta. That drug is YUK!!!

Go to www.drugs.com forum. Search Cymbalta withdraw! I rest my case.
  • :) Thanks for the advice
As for the Cymbalata w/d I know that feeling all too well. As a kid i took tegretol for about 15 years (seizures), but more importantly I took Paxil(severe anxiety and ocd) for about 6 years. OMG. THAT was insane, I had to take almost a full 2 months off work. I couldn't stop throwing up and the nasty electric shocks were terrible. So getting me to the point of even taking anything that messes with my brain has been HUGE! haha. And I just love that when they write the script and you question it 9i did..being an a/d i was panicked) they sshoo you away and say "but I'm not prescribing it to you FOR depression". Like..ummm hello, is THAT going to stop the drug from messing me up? LOL
I can honestly say DDD..I have NEVER met anyone else that has the same feeling that I have (and you) when taking prescription meds or the newest neurontin. (When I first started it I was almost unwakeable..I was so tired!) Maybe there were people around me that DID feel more energized but I don't walk around asking/telling...haha. My husband is a really big guy and we laugh that the one time he had pulled a back muscle and was prescribed muscle relaxers and he took one...I didn't have to watch tv that night! He was out of it..meanwhile..I take 3 of the same a day and add in all the dilaudids and other junk! A few years bck I had a pharmacist ask me wht I felt like when I took my Percocets..I was honest I told him it was like a burst of energy, I was more like the old me( I feel social and my mood is lifted..not miserable in pain).so anyways, he said" Oh..that i surprising"..and never said anything else.
I can only hope that one of these meds DOES help the pain though..energised or not. I am supposed to see him again in August and he wants me up at 900mg by then. If I don't have pain relief by then..I don't know what other med we could try :(
  • I really do not like to say this is just a side effect, but, well, it is as you know by now.

I have been on the stuff and back off it 3 times now. I started again about 4 weeks ago at 400mg 3 times per day and titrated up to 3600 per day.

The "changes" I experienced were exactly the same as the prior two times; depression, no sex, want food, apathetic, sensation changes, dry mouth.... well, you get the idea.

During this period, my wife (8 years younger than me) well, you know, had needs ;-). Hoever, I wanted nothing to do with it and in fact, had ED, of a sort, issues.

Each step up in dosages caused the same effects every time.. Now, that I have been at this level, the side effects are mostly gone and normal drives, desires, sensation are back.

All that being said, I have two problems that persist and they were present the other times I was on the med. These are I do not know exactly in time and space where my limbs are so I stumble and do not recognize a leg "giving out" until it just happens and a near fall occurs. The second persistent effect is even more bizarre, but I understand it and it may be a genetic thing and that is Apraxia (Inability to actually speak a word I am thinking about which hinders my verbal communications at times.

All in all, pretty mild costs for the "numbing" of neural pain.

Let us know if you have further problems as a lot of us can offer the opinion of "It will go away" or "Please, call your Doctor"

Wishing you the best in your journey,
    Sean
