I will be having ACDF C4-C5 one week from today! I am still very nervous!

I will be having 8 weeks off work. I am wondering if I will feel well enough to go on a vacation during this time. I would be driving for about 5 hours. The person I am going with could drive part of the way, but I don't really want her to drive my car! (My sister!).

For those of you that had an ACDF do you think I will fell well enough maybe by week 5 or 6 to go on a trip for a few days?
ACDF C4-5 June 23rd, 2011

Another surgery in the near future. I am 26 years old.

Current Meds- Norco 7.5/325, Cymbalta 60mg, Gabapentin, Adderall 20mg

  • Donna,

We all heal at different rates. Keep in mind a lot of surgeons have their follow ups such as 10 days post op, 6 weeks, 6 months and a year. If all goes well, you might be okay, but I would first run it by your surgeon before you do this. Second, I wouldn't make reservations that you can get refunds on just in case.

Fingers crossed that your doctor will give you the green light. Oh, and don't let your boss know! If your good enough for all that travel, and activities of a vacation, a logical boss might find issue with "sick leave" being used for fun time. (G)

    PCTF C4 - T2, Laminectomies C5, C6 & C7. Severe Palsy left arm/hand.
  • As Brenda said, we all recover differently, but I'll share my results.

I am six weeks post ACDF. This past weekend we went away for a long weekend (reunion). The 5 hour ride was tough (stiff/sore). I had to pace myself as to what I did, tried to get as much rest as possible. Pain levels were up a bit. I did pay for it a bit when I returned - I'm still tired.

I went on about a 3 hour ride after 4 weeks - wedding shower. I didn't drive (couldn't at that point). There was a lot more aches & pains during the rides. I got really tired, so it wasn't as much fun. If my daughter wasn't in the wedding party I wouldn't have gone.

Again, this was my experience, yours could be better or worse.

    4 level ACDF C4-C7 5-2-11, laminectomy & discectomy L4-L5 1/26/12, ALIF L4-5, L5-S1 12/10/12.
  • I took a eight hour car drive 3 weeks after acdf of 2 levels. I did have my neuro's approval. I wanted to spend some time with my son since I was off work.

Everyone is different, just trust your instinct.
