I am writing this because as I read in so many of these posts no other place has people that understand what we go thru each day.
I am 46 and until 2003 was a very healthy man and a gym rat, black belt and avid skier. a car accident ended that as over the next 7 years my back deteriorated and the pain increased. Finally in june of 2010 I agreed to have a posterior lumbar disc fusion with pedicle screws and cage. I did this because I was sick of taking 4 to 8 vicadin a day and they were not helping much anyway.
I awoke from the surgery in the most excruciating pain I could have ever imagined plus my right leg was paralyzed. I had what felt like a bunsen burner on my entire leg, severe stabbings, electrical bolts and a horrible crushing feeling starting in my groin and permeating down my right leg. The DR said a nerve was just swollen and said I would be fine in a few weeks. My wife works in the health industry so she spoke to some doctors she knows and they all said the same thing. THIS IS NOT NORMAL and get to a neurologist ASAP. The neurlolgist I went to did an emg and said I have a severed feremoral nerve and 4 other nerves in my leg severly damaged. The damage is in my groin where the nerve goes thru the pelvic. The condition is called lumbar plexopathy. Over the course of the year I did get some use of my leg back but only about 10% and the pain has only improved slightly. on a scale of 1 to 10 it is regularly in the 9 to 10 range and has me bedridden most of the time. I am on social security with no hope at this time of relief as the DR said nerves only regenerate for about a year. My wife is great and without her support I dont think i could take this torture on a daily basis as I do. I am on percocet, oxycodone and gabapentin. The opiates only make you in such a fog you can ignore the pain and my quality of life sucks. has anyone tried accupuncture for their nerve pain or any other alternate medicine and did it bring any relief? I just found out this week that the surgeon that did the surgery did not perform a PLIF but wat is calle an xlift procedure. the problem is that the xlift is performed thru your side and my incisions are in my back. The DR I am currently seeing thinks I was an experiment. I hope my lawyer not only brings me some financial security but takes this doctors license. I did not agree so an experimental procedure yet apparently that is what I got.
