Any suggestions on what to try next for daily pain?

I was in a car accident and have a herniated disc between C5-C6 and tore my rotator cuff. I have had 2 shoulder surgeries to repair my shoulder. My surgeon says my pain is from my neck and my pain management dr says he doesn’t think it is from my neck.

My question is this does anyone else have pain and burning radiating down their arm from their neck injury? I've tried everything possible pain meds (soma, Percocet, celebrex, and advil), acupuncture, 12 injections in my shoulder/arm for muscle spasms I keep getting, I've had the test to check for nerve damage came back as normal, TENS unit, massage and PT. Nothing seems to help. I really want to find away to get off the pain meds but I am in pain daily. When I try to not take anything I’m in so much pain I feel sick.

Does anyone else have these symptoms and have a suggestion as what I could try next?

  • Welcome to Spine-Health, what could be one of your new best friends. :-) You'll find a wealth of info on the site and the members of the forums are awesome, always ready to help in any way they can and very knowledgeable about spine issues.

Yes, yes, yes, you can absolutely have arm symptoms with neck problems. They can include, but are not limited to, pain, numbness, weakness, tennis-elbow-type symptoms, tingling, pins and needles, and of course, muscle spasms in the upper back, neck pain and heachaches.

I suggest you go to a spine specialist/surgeon, either ortho or neuro, but someone (in my humble opinion) fellowship-trained and only works on spines. They will more than likely get an MRI on your cervical spine so they can see what's happening better.

Why you're probably not getting help with the meds is that your pain is nerve-related and only special nerve concentrated drugs help that.

So, basically don't take it lightly - find a good spine doctor, get an MRI and get the ball rolling to find the problem and a path to a solution. Neck problems are nothing to mess with, trust me.

Take care, keep us posted and feel free to PM me if I can help you in any way.

  • Hey,

I use one more criteria for finding my back and pain docs - I look for the "board certified" in their specialty. My understanding is the board certification means he or she met significant levels of experience, education, treatment, etc which indicates (to me and IMHO) they are highly skilled and experienced and held to a higher standard. As we all know, diagnosing our root medical issues is not easier so I prefer to use these docs. Jerome
