Right elbow pain severe - cervical problem?

Hello,

I have been having pain in my right elbow for over a year now. It has gotten really bad the last 3 weeks. Have had numerous cortizone shots but it always comes back. One orthapedic said he can't do anymore cortizone shots. Will need to do an mri and possibly surgery. Well, I did not want that. So I went to a chiropractor hoping to get relief without surgery. He xrayed my neck and said I had severe DDD, bone spurs and my neck curves the other way. He asked if I had been in a car accident. I said no. He said, Well, you have had some kind of severe trauma to the neck. Could have done it riding a roller coaster, anything.

So now I am going BACK to an orthopedic and get a second opinion. Scared of what he will say.........

  • could be ulner nerve entrapment at elbow or the neck...I just had c7 T1 fusion for shoulder arm elbow pain...does your pain go into your ring finger and pinky?
  • Like Cat mentioned, has your doctors looked at your elbow? Any pain or numbness in your pinkie and half of your ring finger? Is the pain on the inside or the outside of your elbow?

I had this when my C7/T1 was normal (it's going so lost those fingers again), it was determined between exam and NVC/EMG that I had what is called Cubital Tunnel syndrome. Basically my Ulnar nerve was trapped in my elbow, wrist and hand. Most are just trapped in the elbow.

As I mentioned, many of those symptoms have returned for me, but electrical testing shows my prior Cubital surgery is still holding strong, and it is now coming from my C8 nerve in my neck.

I hope you have answers soon. Please let us know how it goes, and Welcome to Spine Health!!

  • At times it does go into my ring and pinky finger. Especially when I am icing my elbow. Numbness at times also.
  • Yes, there is numbness in my ring and pinky finger. the orthopedic has looked at my elbow. The pain is on the outside of my elbow. And right on top of my forearm. Painful to even touch it. I am going for an MRI today for my elbow and my neck. He thinks it is two seperate things. Then follow up doctor visits Wednesday and Thursday. Hope I get some answers. Been suffering for too long.
  • I Had acdf at c7t1 in may for this same problem...for me they felt most of my pain was coming from the neck as the disc there had disintegrated...however, my emg also showed some impingement at the elbow...i do alot of repetitive work, so cubital tunnel also makes sense. Now that neck surgery is done I'm in the waiting game to see how much pain goes in my elbow as the months go by...I'm at 11 weeks now and elbow pain is less by 50%...I'll see in 2 more months how much the ulnar hurts and go from there. Have to wait for more healing before I'll know what next.
  • Went to the cervical surgeon yesterday. I do have some severe DDD in C5, C6 and C7 with some bone spurs. However, I have no pain in my neck (knock on wood). Just in my right elbow and forearm.

Went back to elbow orthapedic. It is my right elbow. Tendonitis, some small tears, and scar tissue. Going to see the hand surgeon next Tuesday and schedule arthoscopic surgery for tendonitis. Finally! An answer.............thanks for all your help everyone and insight.

  • Colleen,

So glad to see they have zeroed in on what is causing your pain, and even happier to hear your neck is not the issue presently. Please let us know how it works out. :)
