  • So I'm 20 years old I work as a youth worker for a non-profit organisation and I've had a really sore neck for about six years then in February this year I hurt my neck falling off my bike. I went to the doctor who said it would most likely be a pulled muscle and sent me to physio I have continued to go once a week and my symptoms got worse so she referred me back to the doctor who sent me to the specialist. My symptoms are as follows:
    Constant neck pain
Headaches that are on my forehead, behind my ears and at the back of my head
My symptoms get worse when i look up or down
I have not slept through the night since Feb
    Muscles are tense and knotted
Pins and needles that are hard to get rid of
numb fingers on my left hand

I had xrays and ct scan and the results came back with nothing so now the specialist has referred me to a neurologist he has also said while I'm still working he doesn't want to put me on any pain killers but the only reason I'm still working is because I need the money.

I'm at the end of my tether panadol and ibuprofen make no difference, its now a long painful wait till I get in to see the neurologist, if anyone could help me I would be really greatful
  • Welcome I am glad you came to this site. I came here about two days ago and really it has made me feel so much better just to have ppl to talk to. I understand where you are coming from with the chronic pain. It never seems to end or go away. Even pain killers don't get rid of it they just decrease it. It is alwasy there. I would ask your doctor about medications that are not narcotic like cymbalta or neurontin. Side effects are there for both but that is something you would have to weigh out to see if they are right for you.
Welcome and I hope you find some relief

Glad you're here. The articles and info hopefully are beneficial to you and support from others is priceless. :)
You mentioned the doctor didn't want to give you the pain killers while you're still working. That is such a hard call. The above advise from nurse is great. Hopefully a med or combo will assist.
Keep giving the doctor feedback with all your reactions.
You're not alone! Keep in touch and take care :)

  • Yea I can't really understand the reluctance to give me pain relief and its annoying seens as the only reason I'm still working is that I've got to earn money some how. I was ment to be seeing the doctor today but we have been hit by a freak snow storm so everything is shut so no doctor for another week !!

..a few things come to mind re' reluctance to give pain meds.
Sometimes when you're young and the tests aren't showing anything specific..docs wonder about symptoms matching test results...esp since our pain is subjective.
..Sometimes they hope it is temporary and prefer more conservative options.
..Sometimes working "under the influence" whether we feel it or not, could effect OR be perceived to affect our job performane...and docs concern is for those in our care.
Whether we work or not..all of us need to realize our driving is at risk..even if ex: accident..not even our fault but our meds would be classified DUI..so we could have big time consequences.

I had to quit work and now I'm on disability. I had to quit. All the focus on controlling my pain and then an innocent person wants to talk or ask me a question and I want to bitch slap them. I couldn't add one more thing to my full attention of not flipping out in pain. That reaction caused me to quit. My stress reduced by not working does help somewhat, too.

The main test..I think..that gave doc some answers was an EMG. He's like...that's not right..thats
not right..and on and on. He liked the machine like proving what I told him and it gave more clear picture which areas of my spine to treat.

Just sharing my experience...maybe something to add to navigating through your situation.
If nothing else, we're here and share in your goal for control of pain and quality of life.
    Thanks for listening!
