How many screws in a one level ACDF?

I am looking over my hospital bill and it says I paid for 5 screws. I had a one level acdf. Is there a screw in the middle or something too? I just thought I had four screws.

  • Donna,

It depends on the plate type they use. My first fusion ...the plate only used 2 screws. 5 doesn't sound right to me. 4 is possible, two on the top, two on the bottom. Mistakes happen on billing. Your x-ray will say for sure! (G)

Maybe they are provided in pack of 5 and you wind up having an extra - one that is used during the drilling process that isn't actually used in the final constuct, Don't be "Chicken"!! Call them and ask why ... maybe one of the first ones broke??

Call them and then let us know !!! ... I'm three level and have 12 screws but I have posterior rods also,

  • The plates come with a extra screw, as the screw only goes in once then it is not usable. So if your surgeon doesn't feel comfortable with the alignment or something and he/she needs to take a screw out they have the screws to do it with. The screws are made to put in then lock in place, and sometimes they either don't lock in right or once they see the films in the OR from placement they may change the placement a bit to have the most sure fit. But you shouldn't have 5 screws in the plate, the plates are pretty standard by manufacture, as I have tried a few of them on, and they all look similar based on the number of levels they are fusing.
  • I see. I am not really that concerned because I have to pay the same amount either way, but I was just curious to know! From my xray it looks like 4 screws! Thanks for all your comments!

  • You are SMART to audit your medical bills!. My wife is a 20+ year RN and specialises in medical billing audits. She says 85% of all bills from hospitals and doctors are wrong!. She audited my ACDF bill and found so many over billings my bill was reduced $4,632!. Check those CPT codes and request copies of all medical records you want all notes!.(hospital bills are a pain in the neck!)
