Hey all,
My names Alistair in 25 and live in New Zealand with my wife Emma. Im a boatbuilder/welder by trade.

I had an accident snowboarding 4 years ago, i fell from about 15 feet at pace, (i went over a small cliff)straight onto a patch of ice. the impact crumpled my knees and i landed on my bum. I ended up with compression fractures to T11, T12 and L1. the worst was T12 with lost 80% of its interior height (its now shaped like a wedge)At the time i had about 3 months off work and recovered fairly quickly. But over the last 12 months i have been developing acute pain in the area of the injury.

Long story short after multiple steriod injections, CT scans, MRI's, Bone scans and visiting 4 different specialists I am going under the knife in 2 days time (september 15) to have the problem area fused.

I came across this forum looking for anything that might help me get through my 3 months off work and judging by what ive read so far (thats not very much) ive found it here.

I look foward to meeting some of you and sharing my experiences over the next wee while.

  • You've found a great site for information and comraderie. Ask questions if needed and you will find that many on this site have had similar problems. I wish you well in your surgery and hope that you heal fast. It appears that you are quite young and in good shape generally, so your time healing may go a bit easier.

As a young man, I also was a boat builder. I used to build fiberglass boats for a small company in the USA.

..to you Alistair, with your upcoming surgery.

Speedy recovery to you and hope it does the trick!

This is the best site..ever! and I'm sure you'll find info and people who can relate to your situation.
And Gary above, a fellow boat builder! How cool is that? :)

Not an original thought..as someone has expressed in post before...that sometimes when you read along here..or other sites...it has a good amount of people still suffering.

The successful stories and people move along with their lives and don't necessarily keep in touch with how surgery or treatment..did the trick..all good now. :)

All that to say.. keep good thoughts! and I'd love to hear how everything goes for you!
    May your recovery be smooth!

  • Thanks for the welcome guys :-)
I'm thinking I'm going to start a blog to publicly track my progress over the course of my surgery/recovery. Might help in keeping me a bit sane to have something I can constantly attend to.
I will post a link to it once it's live plus I will update this site as often as nessecary.

    Thanks again
