After a collision playing rugby on Saturday directly through the top/back of my head and down the back of my neck (e.g. I rain headfirst leaning forward into someone), I have experienced a fair bit of pain and stiffness. It's at its worst when my neck is carrying the weight of my head 'unsupported' by my spine being straight e.g. during sitting down, and trying to sit up / stand up. Pain is either side of the middle of back of my neck but predominantly on the right.
I did feel a small cracking sensation at point of collision and when I rotate my neck it does click. Also feel a click under both shoulder blades when I stretch or roll my shoulders. Have taken ibuprofen and paracetamol and ice to reduce the swelling. Area is pain sensitive to gentle massage right up to the base of the skull.
Have been told its a neck strain but with the cracking and prolonged period of pain (movement better but pain no better) slightly concerned about stress fracture. What is the healing process/likelyhood/risks if it is, and how can I convince hospital to do an xray if I need one?
