In 1974 I hurt my back in Basic Training. In 1977 and 1978 I injured my back 4 times to the point of workers comp. When I hurt my back in 1979 I was told by my Ortopedic Dr that If I didn't change my ways I would be flat on my back within 5 years. In 1983 I injured my back again. In 1988 I was hit in the neck by a falling wood box weighing 30 pounds from a height of 30 feet,I was knocked unconcious and wore a neck brace for 3 months with physical therapy. In 1992 I injured my back yet another time.In 1995 I was recieving injections in both shoulders. In 2000 I had rotator cuff surgery to the left shoulder,a 1 inch tear.In 2001 I had rotator cuff surgery to the left shoulder,a 1 1/2 inch tear.In 2004 I had reurfacing surgery done to my right hip.In 2004 I started epidural injections to the neck,4 a year.In 2007 the pain management Dr refused to inject me anymore, said it was against his hypacratic oath.In 2007 the PM Dr refered me to an ortopedic cervical spine specialist. The CTscan,MRI,and Mylogram results from 2009 are as follows.C5-C6 disc space is desiccated and narrowed, there is a 2mm bridging osteophyite predominantly right sided along the hypertrophic change of uncovertebral joint contributes to moderate to severe right C6 foraminal stenosis.C6-C7 disc space is desiccated and narrowed, there is a 2mm to 3mm broad based bridging osteophyte and hypertrophic change of right uncovertebral joint with minamal to moderate right C7 foraminal stenosis, minamal central canal stenosis.C4-C5 disc space hypertrophic change of uncovertebral joint with left C5 foraminal stenosis.C3-C4 disc space hypertrophic change of left facet joint and uncovertebral joint severely comprises the left C4 nerve root foramen. The Cervical Specialist said there was nothing he could do for me.He sent me back to PM Dr for a two level total nerve root block. The PM Dr refered me to another PM DR.The new PM DR gives me 2 level, total nerve root blocks through the front of the neck, three times a year.
In 2010 The new PM Dr refered me to a spinal ortopedic specialist for the lumbar spine. The MRI results are as follows: T1-L1 are normal. L1-L2 broad based disc bulge is associated with facet joint hypertrophy. L2-L3 broad based posterior bulge is associated with ligamentum flavum and facet joint hyprtrophy. Mild central canal stenosis. Mild leftward neuroforaminal narrowing.L3-L4 broad based disc bulge is associated with ligamentum flavum and facet joint hypertrophy.Bilateral subarticular narrowing.Mild bilateral neuroforaminal narrowing.L4-L5 broad based disc bulge is associated with ligamentum flavum and facet joint hypertrophy. Bilateral subarticular narrowing. Mild rightward neuroforaminal narrowing.L5-S1 broad based bulge with lateral extension is noted.Superimposed central disc proteusion measuring 6mm in AP diameter is seen.Mild ventral thecal sac compression.Significant bilateral facet joint hypertrophy. No central canal stenosis with AP diameter measuing 14 mm.Severe bilateral neuroforaminal narrowing with exiting L5 nerve root encroachment. The lumbar spinal orthopedic specialist said that there was nothing he could do.In 2011 I had a three level epidural lumbar injection. Three weeks later I had a 2 level total nerve root block lumbar injection. My blood pressure went through the roof imediately after the lumbar nerve root block and has yet to come back down. I'm now on high blood pressure meds.I searched out a neurosurgeon. In 6 days I am having a transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion L5-S1 and shaving of L4 disc and general clean up.
Can anybody do a little decoding of all this to make sense of it all. Not the DR snafu's but the medical jargon of my test results, in lay terms.
But I must admit, it is amazing of the two Specialists, that said there was nothing that they could do! And didn't bat an eye while saying it, then the Neurosurgeon saying that I need surgery. And that we need to address it imediately without batting an eye.
A life time of pain and suffering...

  • Great to hear the Neurosurgeon is doing the surgery so you will get relief from your pain. Anything that says severe or significantly means attention from a Spine Surgeon and although there are some people who can get by without surgery for awhile but it depends on the severity of your pain and if any nerve compression or spinal instability and looks like you found a good Neurosurgeon to help you.

Search in the blue box at the top of the page for post op must haves and some of the other terms in your MRI so you can get Dr. written articles and definitions that explain these terms to you. http://www.spine-health.com/forum/back-surgery-and-neck-surgery/post-op-must-haves-0

I hope you update us on how your surgery went and there's a post saying October surgeries where you may want to add your date of your surgery and see others who are having surgery this month. Take care. Charry
