Can someone please tell me what the recovery is like for posterior cervical surgery for c6-7 compared with acdf surgery. I had acdf and now must have posterior surgery for another disc herniation. I have 3 kids and have to make arrangments. Also is the pain much worse?

Thank you

    hi veronica,
It all depends how much you have done and everyone is differentas far as healing goes. I had a major rebuild of C3 thru C6 back in 2007. Very invasive
that took 3 hours from the anterior side and 3 hours from the posterior side.
I had a lot of hardware installed but I was only in the hospital just a day and a half. First few weeks were slow going but I was walking a lot soon after that. Your Dr(s) can give you a better idea what to expect, just follow their
instructions and don't over do it. Hope all goes well for you.
  • Have to agree with Ranger about recovery time. I have had 4 posterior surgeries the last 4 years. The first one was done along with a acdf at c3-c4,c4-c5. They removed the lamia at c5,c6,c7. I was in the hospital 3 days. I did have some problems getting out of bed but I did learn to roll my way out. Listen to your Doctors and you should do well. As far as pain levels, again we are all different and I always tell my Doctors what my pain is and where. There is no sense in being in pain, if you need stronger meds leave the Doctors know.
