Well, my sig contains the pertinent facts. I'm 34, live in Minneapolis, and have managed back and leg pain for about 16 years. Chiropractic has helped a lot, but I've never been able to kick it entirely and over the last few years, the numbness and weakness became the issue more than the pain. Chiro kept the pain at bay but the numbness became more or less constant, some days worse than others. MRI diagnosed herniations at L4-L5 and L5-S1. Had one cortisone injection but it did nothing for the numbness and weakness. Awaiting word from insurance company to schedule discectomy. I've heard all about people who have overcome this with some fantastic exercise or machine, but I've decided to just take the bull by the horns and get this taken care of before it can spiral into something worse.

  • That's rough you've had pain for so long. I hope your surgery goes well. Did you get a second opinion for surgery?

I hope you don't see the Chiropractor for anymore adjustments, when I had a herniated disc the Chiropractor refused to adjust my back but only gave me some inferential treatment with a machine to take down the swelling. Keep us posted about your surgery. Take care. Charry

  • hi and welcome to the forum! we are here to offer you support and answer what questions we can. have you tried any other conservative treatments before you venture into surgery? charry is right about the chiro treatments making your back injury worse.. i would see a surgeon before you see him again.. there is alot of other treatments out there which might be of benefit to you.. of course all of this is between you and your doctor.. please be sure and get that second opinion if surgery is your decision.. the more confirmation you have, the better for your recovery!! be sure and check out the "Back and Neck surgery" forum for more input..Jenny :)
  • Welcome to spine health.Sorry that you have had pain for so long. I was also wondering if you have had more than one opinion from a fellowship trained orthopedic or neurosurgeon?

I had a discectomy/laminectomy at the same levels as yours almost 3 months ago. Have you had any relief with nerve meds, heat/cold tens while you are awaiting surgery? Personally I would not go to a chiropractor with a herniation.

Wishing you all the best with your surgery.
