Facial numbness

I had a neck fusion two years ago. It felt ok at first but now it is causing me pain again. Since I am on pain medication for my back it helps keep my neck pain under control. But as soon as my medication starts to wear off I can feel the pain and can barely move it. Anyway I have a new symptom and do not know if it is neck related. Not sure if I should have an appointment with my orthopedic surgeon or regular doctor. Actually two symptoms, I have started having left sided facial numbness that comes and goes, I woke up the other day and the whole left side of my face was numb. It took a couple hours to completely go away. This has been coming and going for awhile now. I have also this week started having dizzy spells, but I started taking soma along with my percocet for my back here in the last week so the dizziness could be from that. Anyway has anyone with neck problems experienced any kind of facial numbness. I know with neck pain it is usually in the arms or fingers so this facial numbness has me baffled. Like I said I am not sure which doctor to call for an appointment.

  • Howdy woman!!!

Wow... I read your post like 3 times... What you are describing are UPPER cervical (eg... C3 nerve (C3/4) and above. Now... if you chew in your sleep (eeer... grind - I'm guilty...heheh) that can account for some of that. Have you talked with your Spine specialist (surgeon) about this? Me, I would be in a bit of "freak-a-zone" here?!?

The facial is way.....upper.. So not sure what the heck is going on there. My vote? Call your spine (diagnostic dude) or surgeon with your concerns and see what kicks..... That is what I would do.

Brenda (Ms. mess of the neck!!!) Please let us know how it turns out please? Gentle *HUGZ*

  • I get a little facial numbness occationally. I haven't talked to my NS or PM about it because I for get and mine is so infrequent I don't know if it is a side effect from my meds or something else.

I know it is a symptom of MS as well, and I was tested for that last year so I don't freak out as much. I kind of racked it up to myelopathy since it can effect you anywhere.

I did have a new cervical mri and there was nothing showing on my cervical besides my fusion and some foraminal stenosis around the fusion (c5-7).

Let me know what you find out. I am very curious. I know when I have bouts of it- I get scared. I haven't had any since mid August (crossing my fingers).

    Feel Better >:D<

  • I have had some facial numbness; lips and cheeks etc. Also get dizzy and have had numerous tests done and found nothing over the past year and a half. Just had a myoview stress test the day of my pre-op and everything seemded in order there. I keep wondering too, if it is from one of my meds, or what is going on. So many symptoms with all of this, don't know what to think. It is kinda scary.

  • This facial numbness is scary and you just don't know what it is from. Could be the neck, medications and I also started wondering about stroke! EEK!,, When I see my surgeon and doctor in the next few weeks for medical clearance and pre-op I will mention it. At least I think I will lol I don't know if I want anything messing up this surgery at this point. Maybe I should wait till after. What do you think????
  • I have been getting mild facial numbness at the jaw line/upper neck. Doctor says it is likely due to herniation at C4. Just got a steroid injection there (just now coming off the sedation :) ), so hopefully it will resolve. It's not painful, just kind of disconcerting. I also wondered about stroke at first, so I understand your concern.
  • Too soon,

    I hope the injection helps.

    Splendagirl,

Although you don't want anything to delay your surgery, I think perhaps you should mention this to one of your doctors. Have you had your preop yet? I was cleared for surgery and am now playing a waiting game. Wish I could be of more help.

I have had bouts of dizziness since last fall and numerous tests; (stress test, tiltable, labs, etc.) that still have not pinpointed anything.

Hope you can figure it out.

    Gracie
  • I think this was all the meds and stress for me.
  • It is amazing what stress can do.
