Neck surgery Dissolvable fixation device?..

Ok this is going to sound so stupid, but I had a neck fusion two years ago and they took bone marrow out of hip etc..At one level where I had a disk herniation that was cutting off the spinal cord like an hour glass. Any way I got immediate arm relief and also my neck stopped getting stuck but have continued to have pain. Anyway lately is is getting worse and the only thing controlling the pain is the medications I am on for my back pain. When it starts to wear off the pain is pretty bad and I can hardly turn my neck. Anyway never had a MRI or xray afterward showing if my neck ever fused. So I am getting worried. I will talk to my new surgeon about this problem but I know we can't really address the issue till after my back surgery. But what I was wondering is if any of you with neck fusions ever had a dissolvable device put in your neck? If so what was it? It's funny I just remembered that and I do not remember seems like she said it was either a dissolvable plate or a dissolvable fixation device. Has anyone heard of this. At the time it was something new that she wanted to use, she was a neurosurgeon and now with my problems I am curious as to what it was and if it dissolved or whatever. I do plan on requesting a copy of my records but the are so incompetent who knows how long it will take to receive them, I asked for a letter one time and said it was urgent and it took them 3 months to get it to me. They lose my home address every time I give it to them etc..Anyway these are major reasons I found someone else for my back surgery. Thank goodness! For my back surgery I found an orthopedic spine specialist who is top rated in the bay area and he has done the spine fellowship. :) anyone with any clues as to what this dissolvable device was?. Maybe I can get copy's of records from that hospital or my insurance so I can find out exactly what she did and give the info to my new surgeon. Last time it happened so quickly and I wasn't thinking straight or anything to remember everything, this time I know exact details of what is happening and everything. :)

  • Only thing i know is dissolvable is the stiches they use, I had that my last surgery. No staples had to be removed,

  • A Neurosurgeon down here invented the plate that dissolves over about a 2 year period. It was big in the news about 3 years ago down here. Considering my fusion didn't happen, I'm kind of glad I have "regular metal" hardware, otherwise nothing would be holding that *cough* joint together!!

If you want the surgeons name I will PM you with it. It is basically a biodegradable plate that our body naturally breaks down.

[my edit] I sent you a PM with his name and number.... :)

  • Wow they have a plate that disollves? Not bad, look at all the hardware removal surgery they could avoid.

Wish i would of known that, this metal plate in my head is killing me! Git-ir- done

  • Thanks Brenda that is exactly what it was! Now I can look up the info on the Internet and when I see my new surgeon again I can give hime the info so he will know what I am talking about. Then we can get a new MRI and see what is going on! :)
  • Nodding, if you search for Dr G in Florida, he has a website. If I remember right, it took him like 5 years to get the mixture right to dissolve over like 2 years. My guess is *most* failed fusions are known well before that, so 2 years gives support and then goes away as most would be fully fused by then. ☺

  • I never had a choice she just said that was what she was using. I remember thinking at the time that I did not know if I liked that idea or not, simply because it would not be permanent. It will be interesting to see and find out what's going on.
  • So his plate is now with other doctors to use? Coolness!!! The original plan on my second fusion (adjacent level failure) was to remove the old hardware, and put in a new plate and screws over the new level. Instead he used this wing thing. My hubby and I and my ENT of all people feel the different stress between the dissimilar hardware caused the fusion to fail. Dunno, just know it didn't work.

I tried to get with this doctor (the one I PM'd you about) when my neck started going south, but I was an interesting enough case back then! Rofla!! I thought about him again when my neck got squirrelly, but decided after talking with some fellow multi level spineys, to go Orthopedic spine surgeons this go around.

I get the feeling if she used dissolving hardware on you, and your fusion failed, you would big time know it (no support?) I hope you have answers soon. Not knowing is the worst part of this stuff!! Gentle *HUGZ*
