Ok something is definitely not right with my spine. I know that i have disc bulges and arthritis but i've never had this problem with my spine before. My stomach goes into spasms,i feel it coming from my spine and going forward then my spine tightens up and i flip backwards like i'm doing gymnastics. Its hard to breath and it hurts like hell. After the third or fourth time it happened i started crying. I realized it wasn't going to stop. My daughter came in and put a large ice pack under my back to try and calm it down. It took probably half an hour for it to calm down, Its still tightening up but nothing like it was earlier. My husband came in and saw my in a spasm and was going to take me to the hospital but i refused. I don't want to be stuck with a needle and i don't want muscle relaxants. I've spent a great deal of time trying to get medications out of my body so that it will function better the last thing i want is for more to be put back in.I would just love to know why my spine keeps going into huge spasms like that. I've had spine problems for nine years now and i've never experienced anything like this.

  • This is horrible!!! I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. Did you consider going to the ER? Definitely phone your doctor on Monday, if they aren't open today. Please keep us updated.
  • another night of bad spasms in my stomach, still feels like its coming from my spine. i feel so sick from it. i was told as therapy that my diaphragm is stuck to my ribs, they can't even get under my ribs to try and release it,but there not giving up that easy. My whole left side is very very tight, not surprising considering how bad my spasms were on the weekend. am still waiting for the doctors to come up with some sort of plan to help me out of this mess that is brewing.
  • Tammy you need to get your thoracic checked out. Ask about TOS (Thoracic Outlet Syndrome). Call your NS/OS and see how soon you can get in. I see you have some T issues already.

  • Hey there,

I know how horrible those 'spasm' nights are.
I know how much I hate to have any prescription meds. When that happens, I do try to ice my back, then I try heat, then I try ibuprofin, and a little walking. The walking is a joke b/c I 'lose my breath' when the spasms are that bad and almost feel like I could collapse.

If they don't got away after all of this, and I usually try to give it 1-2 hours, I do take a valium. I tell my husband so I keep myself 'honest'. Anyhow, sometimes, when the spasms are that bad, it's not the worst thing in the world to manage them with muscle relaxer.

However, if you really want to avoid that, they do have milder muscle relaxers (orphenadrine?) or I'm sure other options that you can discuss with your doctor.

Wish I had more advice. I just know how sucky those spasms are.
  • I called and made an apt. with my doctor, but i can't see her until the middle of november.Apparently she's going on vacation another four week wait, big surprise.Every time i need to see her for something important i have to wait four to six weeks. She's on vacation more then she's in her office.I live in Niagara Falls Canada and if you already have a doctor no other doctor will take you on because there are so many people that need a family doctor. I told her secretary that i haven't heard from the neurologist for an apt. yet and she said she was going to fax them again today so hopefully i'll hear this week. She told me to call them tomorrow to verify that they got it. I'm hoping that the first one she sent they've had and i'm just on a list it would suck to find out that i've waited this long because they never got the first referral.
My pain level has been so high i don't know if i should call and try and get into the pain specialist early,i'm not supposed to see him until December and i really don't want him injecting my spine if i'm having bad spasms them in case i have one when he's doing it.Maybe theres some other medication he can put me on to control the pain.
  • Sorry Tammy.

Please do what you feel is right for you.

On the above post I did not mean to sound like medical advice, that was my personal opinion.

    Hang in there *hugs*

  • Not at all Julie, everyone that i've been seeing has been telling me the same thing that i needed to see my GP so she can try and get my neurologists apt. sooner. Unfortunately i have a doctor who really doesn't care too much about her patients.
  • Is there another doctor you can use?
I have to tell you, my doctor works out of a major hospital and is tough to get an appointment with BUT they will assess the individual and on more urgent cases, get you in sooner. Especially if you are an existing patient.

Sadly, I found most back doctors (orthos and neuros) around here are all 4-6 week waits when I was initially having issues.

  • Tammy, do you go to physiotherapy or massage therapy? It would be interesting to see if a therapist could work on your psoas muscle, which is deep in the abdomen. I've had it released several times and it has eased some of the spasms and lower back pain immensely.

I have trigger point injections when spasms get really bad - don't know if that's an option for you or not. I have a prescription for Marcaine, which is longer acting than Lidocaine, so I usually get a few days to a few weeks' relief.

Something simple that can eventually ease muscle spasms is a magnesium and malic acid combination, which a lot of fibromyalgia patients use. You have to persist with it for at least several weeks before you'll know if it makes a difference, but it might be worth a try??

Good luck...if things get really bad, a trip to the ER might be worthwhile, though I understand your concern about pain meds, etc.

Take care....I have lived with spasms for years, and I know how miserable they can be.

  • I've waited for five months to see this neurologist and haven't even gotten a apt. date yet. Everyone that i'm seeing seems to think that my spasms are spinal cord related. I see,a physio, a massage therapist, an osteopath, pain doc. and a naturopath besides my GP.No ones suggested trigger point injections yet.
  • I agree with Tracy, magnesium (magnesium phosphate) does alleviate the spasms somewhat, you can get this at any health food store.

I am currently experiencing lower back mussel spasms and the only thing that is stopping me from swallowing 20mg+ of morphine is typing this.

Yes I have Valium and Pethidine which will definitely help but I don't want to take this stuff anymore!

    Ahh, too sore and hurties.

I will visit with my uncle Jack D.

There has to be a way to get through these episodes...???
  • the last time i went to physio she did work on my psoas muscle, it hurt but at the same time felt really good. It was so tight, she asked me if i wanted her to stop and i said no because i could feel it helping. That night i had a back ache and my stomach hurt but no spasms.
  • Hi, Sounds good and worth a try, I don't mind the ache but the spasms are a bit much and I can't sleep without meds :-/

My spine looks like the same shape as a Z right now but soaking in hot water helps a little.

    Thanks for your kind advice.
